Va. Lawmakers OK Proposed Gay Marriage Ban
Seems that Virginia has added itself to the list of states banning gay marriage.

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050226/ap_on_re_us/gay_marriage_virginia

"Virginia law already prohibits same-sex marriages. However, many legislators argued that an amendment is necessary to ensure that courts do not force Virginia to recognize gay marriages or civil unions performed in other states."

This is my state, so it's my responsibility to suck it up and shamefully post this news article. It makes me sick.

1. Truly ironic
A few years ago, one of my office co-workers was a gay pro-Bush Republican. She and her lover had a formal commitment ceremony (complete with wedding dress and tux) at a park near their home in (drum roll) Virginia.

I wonder what she thinks of good ole Bush and the Republicans now?

2. Good quote
"We are not threatened by gay marriage. We are threatened by our overreaction to it."

3. This is so shameful!
By the way, they are going to attempt to introduce one of these wacky amendments in California.

It will fail - it will die a quick death.

To my shame, however, it is my wacky state assemblyman, funded by none other than Ahmanson (the Dominionist/Theocrat), Mr. Haynes, that intends to sponsor it.

4. and as a friend of Virginians ...
I feel I ought to post THESE links. There seem to be some very determined and creative progressive activists in your state.

"Members of Equality Virginia, the state's largest gay rights group, acknowledged they are facing an uphill fight in a state that already bars same-sex marriage and civil unions."

5. we are not the party of gays
we are the party of civil rights and oppressed.

these bans are sickening. do we learn nothing from history like George Santayana said? didnt we have bans against blacks and whites marrying and other ridiculous laws?

when we look back on how bad blacks and other minorities were treated in this country, we are astonished; how did this happen in America? yet we cant realize that the same will happen years from now, looking back on this time? 'what were we thinking?' again will be a dominant view.

time again conservatives are on the wrong side of history fighting against what should be. much of what is today they tried to prevent. they still look back at the sixties as something that went wrong.

As Democrats we need to fight for peoples rights. we cannot give in. I dont know why there is massive demonstrations for this homophobic policy.

7. Those legislators certainly don't have enough to do.
And why they are taking marching orders from the likes of Jerry Fawell and Pat Robertson, whose organizations don't pay taxes - but you can bet bribes. They are a disgrace (Jerry and Pat, too.).

Long, long ago (sometime in the 70's?) there was a movement for Northern Virginia to secede from the rest of the state. Some folk didn't like their tax dollars wasted on the rednecks. Cutting them loose sounds good today.
