Now 'Jerry Springer - The Opera' is forced to stay off Broadway
-------------------------------------
By Anthony Barnes, Arts and Media Correspondent
27 February 2005
-------------------------------------
A Broadway run of the musical Jerry Springer - The Opera has been scrapped in the fallout from a Christian fundamentalist group's campaign against the award-winning show.

It is the latest twist in an extraordinary few days, which has seen Christian Voice - believed to be little more than a "one-man band" led by Stephen Green - pressure a cancer charity into rejecting proceeds from a gala performance of the show in London. A question mark now hangs over a UK tour of Jerry Springerdue to take place in the autumn, with one theatre having withdrawn and at least one other considering its position.

Jon Thoday, the show's producer, said the financial backer of the New York run had pulled out as a result of developments in the UK. "At the moment it's off ... because of the furore."

The developments have raised concerns that a fringe group can have such a devastating effect on a legitimate stage show, lauded by critics and audiences.

3. Jerry should probably do a show on that! Whitehouse Gone Wild.
Between Gannon/Guckert being the male prostitute, Condi and her stilettos, Colin's dancing to the Village People's YMCA, and, last but not least, Rove's revelation of his suspected S&M fetish, there is material for at least an hour program. It's a cast that only Jerry could manage.

6. The wing nut needs a taste of his own medicine...
publish his address and phone number and have all the theatre people that he's put out of work go picket his place.

Seriously, this has become ridiculous. If some right wing nut doesn't like something they scream around a bit and everyone caves in to them. It only encourages them to act like fools and get away with it.

7. RIGHT!! They must be stopped. They are stepping on peoples
rights (in this case, freedom of expression) and getting away with it. Who is letting them do this? I don't personally care for the Springer Show but it has the right to be open for the people who want to see that kind of thing. They begin with groups people won't miss or don't really know anything about but soon it will be our lives they will touch ... yours and mine. How do we stop them before it gets that far?

8. Okay, Now this is a direct assault on MY turf!
I want these bastards crushed. There can not be censorship of theatre. Forgetabout it. This guy should have been strangled at birth! I cannot believe that one person can shut a show down. He is not only stifeling art but he is effecting peoples livlihood. I hope he gets a good dose of what he is handing out to others. That is my "Christian" thought about him, the slime! GRRRR!

11. Are You Sure Your Turf Isn't Clear Channel?
CC has moved into Broadway in a huge way in recent years, haven't they?

Isn't most of Broadway now corporately owned?

If the corps are too chicken-shit, to hell with them. Let it go off-Broadway where people are willing to take a risk.

13. There are some yes. Not most. They are incoporated ,sure. You have to be to
raise money. I don't know what your definition of corporate owned is. You are right about Disney and GE moving in though. But that doesn't mean you abandon Broadway to them! And by its definiton , "Off Broadway" doesn't allow you to have enough seats to pay for a large endevor .It isn't only location but the number of seats allowed that grants a a "Broadway " appellation.
