78-year-old faces charges over marijuana stashed in freezer
Associated Press

DANVILLE, W.Va. -- A 78-year-old woman faces drug charges and authorities are searching for her 72-year-old boyfriend after police found more than a pound of marijuana stashed in a freezer on her property.

State police arrested Mollie Williams last week after responding to a dispute between her granddaughter and the granddaughter's husband, who were arguing over drugs. Police learned the man allegedly had bought marijuana from Williams, State Police Cpl. Larry O'Bryan said Monday.

Armed with a search warrant and a drug-sniffing dog, troopers went to Williams' residence near Danville. The dog led troopers to a freezer in an outbuilding where the marijuana, worth an estimated $4,000, was hidden under frozen meat and other food, O'Bryan said.

Williams was jailed and later released on $15,000 bond. Her live-in boyfriend, Jack White, who was recovering from heart bypass surgery, was given the opportunity to turn himself in but failed to do so, authorities said. He remained at large Monday.

29. The ailments that are lessened by
judicious intake of this antidotal plant continue to be discovered often. The very recent "defense against Alzheimers" story really was an eye-opener. The insanity of banning herb and allowing tobacco astounds me.

It is good to read a fellow Duer make such coomon sense comments.

36. This shit infuriates me.
78 motherfucking years old with some weed, maybe for arthritis or because it's naturally good for you (we have cannaboid receptors in our brains - we're designed to use it). Wow. Some collar, guys. Good thing all the rapists and killers are locked away, eh?

Marijuana prohibition is perhaps the most glaring example of our country's insanity. For crying out loud, the Constitution and Declaration of Independence are written on HEMP PAPER! Jefferson likely taught Washington how to cultivate marijuana.

This country is completely bonkers.

In any event, this seems like an absurdly cruel prosecution.

Does anyone know if it's rumour or truth that had she hidden it in coffee beans, the dog would have been "defeated"? I had heard that somewhere about coffee beans, but doubt that it's true.

16. Which is why cayenne pepper is a good thing.
Sprinkled on carpets, cayenne pepper is supposed to be able to defeat even the very best drug dogs.

It doesn't just defeat them, either- the pepper takes the dog right out of the equation, or so I've been told.....

you may have sent a chill down the spines of all the small town cops in America. What about fighting those damn America ruining hippies? And without the pot busts and writing tickets for excessive dirty windshields what would small town cops do? OMG just think of the backlash what would small town papers write about? Chilling just chilling.

7. The cops in my small town really couldn't care less about pot.
Hell, some of them grow it. Most of the cops I know would rather spend their time doing things more useful to the community, like busting meth labs and catching car thieves.

My experience is that small-town cops are much more practical and focused on what's good for the community, kinda like Andy Taylor. They have lower budgets, so they really have to make the money count.

23. I'm sorry to hear that.
I live in TN. The fact is, this is a pretty poor part of the country, and marijuana is the #1 cash crop of the state. It gets a lot of poor old farmers up here through the rough times. The cops here understand that, for the most part. Of course, contraband is sort of built into the history of this community; there used to be a pretty big moonshine industry here; I guess that plays a role in the cops' turning a blind eye to it.

It appears that the number of deaths caused by Vioxx will be revised upwards to between 89,000 to 139,000 (the data is for the United States alone).

in the year 2000 for all licit and illicit drug-induced deaths: 16,926

alcohol: 110,640
tobacco: 430,700

wow! so that's why i can see bacardi commercials on the television and ads that tell me that i could commit date rape if i smoke pot! what the hell! why would i logically choose a drug that kills 0 people in the US each year??
that's outrageous

21. Outrageous! I know for a fact that elderly women can NOT
be held responsible for what is stashed in their freezers!!

I helped my grandmother clean out her chest freezer in her house a few years ago. There were peaches dated 1952!!!

If the pot was found in a freezer in an outbuilding, who knows who may have put it there?

I hope Ms. Williams gets a good lawyer.

30. Ridiculous.
Even more ridiculous than actually arresting someone for having a plant is the estimated street value they put on the weed. $4,000 for a pound of West Virginia homegrown? How about $900. I hate these draconian drug laws.

43. For purposes of law enforcement, they never list street value
based on poundage, it's always converted to individual sale sizes and then multiplied out -- it's to make it seem like drug trafficking is more financially viable and cause OMG! statements

45. Even better: calculation of smokable weight of live goods
IIRC there is a line drawn on the wall somewhere, and it's four feet off the floor.

Any pot plant that's as tall as or shorter than the line cures to one pound of marijuana.

Any pot plant that's taller than the line cures to two pounds of marijuana.

A four-foot marijuana plant that yields a pound of grass is going to be about as wide as your house, but those are the standards.

31. Two words- Rush Limbaugh
WTF is wrong with America?

I saw a bumper sticker today- Proud to be an American. I could only think that it really meant- Proud to be Stupid.
I mean, if it weren't for STUPID people, we could be using the same funds it takes to chase old stoners around, and be building classrooms. Or instead of being stupid and trying to fight the inevitable decline in oil reserves by invading Iraq, we could be building a national rail system. Or any of dozens of fantastic things. But judging from a country that still clings to McDonald's, while Europeans are enjoying fresh gourmet sourdoughs, or espresso's, or fine meals, or fine art.
Where the fuck are the values of aesthetics or beauty or culture?
America SUCKS!

41. I fully expect marijuana to become legal in my lifetime.
That's assuming I live an average lifespan, that is.

It'll become necessary - so many things can be manufactured from hemp, its seed and oil that can replace what we're running out of that we'll have no choice but to legalize it, or collapse.

Hope I'm around to see it.
