Chiles dropping out of governor's race, citing residency rules
The Associated Press
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.

Lawton "Bud" Chiles III is dropping out of the governor's race, citing a provision in the state constitution that requires a gubernatorial candidate to live in the state for the seven years before the election.

Chiles, the son of the late governor, announced in January he was going to run for the seat being vacated by Gov. Jeb Bush. But he recently learned about the residency restriction and decided to drop out of the race, said Ron Sachs, a friend of Chiles and former communications director for his father.

5. Is there any buzz about a senate run for Jeb?
or anything else? Sorry to hijack your thread :)

maybe Chiles could run for house or soemthing unless the residency rules apply to that also.

6. He has said that he wants to return to the private sector
He hasn't ruled out a run in the future, but has said that he would not run for anything in 2006 and would not run for President in 2008 (perhaps he is keeping the door open for the VP nomination).

8. I think the rules governing residency for Fed offices are governed
by the the Constitution. Basically you just have to live in the district and meet citizenship requirements, etc.

7. To me this is a pretty good development
I'd rather have Jim Davis or Betty Castor over Chiles. He was basically running on his family name and was an unknown. Davis and Castor are much better campaigners and I know where they stand on issues.

10. Chiles Drops Out of Florida Governor Race
Source: AP
http://apnews1.iwon.com/article/20050301/D88IFBFO0.html

The son and namesake of former Florida Gov. Lawton Chiles Jr. dropped out of the 2006 governor's race Tuesday because does not meet the state's residency requirement.

Lawton "Bud" Chiles III, 51, said he had not been aware the constitution requires a gubernatorial candidate to live in the state for the seven years before the election. He had announced his candidacy in January.

Chiles, a Democrat, moved back to Florida two years ago after living in the Northeast for about a decade. He previously lived in Tallahassee, where he ran a communications company.

Chiles had been planning a walk through Florida later this month, 35 years after his father took a thousand-mile walk from Pensacola to the Florida Keys in his successful campaign for the U.S. Senate. Lawton Chiles Jr. served 18 years in the Senate, then was governor from 1991 until his death in 1998.
