U.S. Commander Says Size of Iraq Insurgency Falling
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20050301/wl_nm/iraq_usa_abizaid_dc&cid=574&ncid=1480

Army Gen. John Abizaid, head of U.S. Central Command, told the Senate Armed Services Committee (news - web sites) he believed the emerging political process, including the Jan. 30 election, was helping to drive the number of militants down.

Insurgent attacks on U.S. forces and particularly on Iraqi police and security forces have continued. On Monday a car bomber killed 125 people in Hilla, south of Baghdad and the al Qaeda-related group claimed responsibility.

But Abizaid said improved Iraqi intelligence sources and "treason within his own organization" had lead to successes against Zarqawi. "And his days in Iraq (news - web sites) are numbered," he said.

Abizaid said no more than 3,500 militants took part in a failed attempt to disrupt the Jan. 30 election, when Iraqis defied the risks and voted in large numbers.

That would be the important stat.

13. note the wording
Edited on Tue Mar-01-05 07:03 PM by SlavesandBulldozers
there is a big difference between "Zarqawi's days are numbered" and "Zarqawi's days in Iraq are numbered". one sounds tough, one sounds like it wants to sound tough but is non-committal.

15. whew that's reassuring
i was beginning to get worried that the numbers of insurgents were going up. This is good news. I began to get worried after we "found the WMD" then promptly "liberated the Iraqis". Yes it was right about the time that we were "greeted with flowers". Remember? It looked at one point, after we "spent 300 million dollars" in a "one-month" "war" that these "dead-enders" and "Sodom Loyalists" were actually capable of putting up a fight. It's good to know that things are going as planned and reported because as a proud nation, we wouldn't want to lose any credibility in the eyes of the world :eyes:
