Justice Department To Help Cities Struggling With Crime

WASHINGTON -- Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Monday that the Justice Department is sending teams of federal agents to five more cities struggling with violent crime, including New Orleans. He is extending a program begun last year in 15 cities.

Investigators will focus on prosecuting people for firearms violations, which often accompany gang activity, illegal drug organizations and organized crime groups.

Gonzales also said he will move aggressively to prosecute obscenity cases.

In his first lengthy address since becoming attorney general in early February, Gonzales said people who distribute obscene materials do not enjoy constitutional guarantees of free speech.


Hmm, looks like payoff for Fundamentalist voting block in the last election. Alberto must have been one of those folks carrying around signs during Mardi Gras telling everyone they are going to hell.

Well, good luck trying to 'clean up' the porn in New Orleans.... They'll have to shut down Mardi Gras which will probably cause New Orleans to attempt to secede from the union again.

New Orleans is a magnet for fundies around the country to come and play and enjoy the pleasures of the flesh far from home with no one to witness. There must be incredible confusion in the conservative community with this news. Can one die of hypocrisy?

6. LOL--those people with the "you're going to hell" signs were around

long before Don Alberto Torquemada rose to power.

Long ago, for example there was "the chaplain of Bourbon Street", the Reverend Bob Harrington. Let's just say the Rev. Harrington eventually fell faster than Lucifer from the dizzying heights of heaven. (I remember a private detective telling me the story of how he let the Rev's wife know that the Rev was buying his girlfriend a new Mercedes.)

How hilarious that Alberto VO5 would concentrate more on cleaning up the "obscenity" than on cleaning up the guns. Bourbon Street, with its raucous and over-hyped nekkid shows, is one of the safer streets of New Orleans.

I too, went to Mardi Gras in the 60's and 70's. Last one was filled with these wackos.

their increase seems to come at the same time as the increase in "show your tits" incidents.

I always noticed that that was the common cry from males in the crowds. But the number of women who complied was negligible, even in the French Quarter, compared to what that number is today.

10. You should see them at Southern Decadence

which is a festival for Gays. It can be a bit raunchy (more so than Mardi Gras) and the bible thumpers are right there in the middle of it. Lapping it up. Just last year they made the bars stop showing gay porn on their big screens and I think the attention this one minister brought to that particular practice played a large role in the enforcement.
