Shining Path rebels stage first attack in four years
A resurgence of violence by Shining Path rebels in Peru this week raised questions on whether the Maoist group, thought to have been nearly eradicated, is staging a comeback.

Shining Path fighters ambushed an army patrol Thursday, killing five soldiers and two civilians and wounding several others, the group's bloodiest attack on the army since the killing of five soldiers in a 1999 helicopter ambush.

Authorities are doubly concerned because Thursday's attack was on a patrol sent out specifically to root out what were thought to be remnants of the Shining Path.

The American media whores are just amazing. Everyone is a terrorist. If you keep kicking a friendly dog sooner or later is turn and attack you because it doesn't have any option left.

2. Sendero Luminosa are indeed terrorists
By anyone's standards. I thought they were pretty much history, though.

3. "Terrorism." Peru's example.
1. According to the US, "terrorism" includes any armed struggle against a "pro-US" regime. "Freedom fighters" conduct armed struggle against "anti-US" regimes. What's the real criterion for demarcating the two?

2. The left applauds or is neutral toward Peru's pro-Cuban MRTA armed movement, while condemning the Maoist Shining Path. Both are armed movements. It always struck me as interesting that the two are held in such different esteems among the American left when both are certainly responsible for actions that have resulted in the loss of civilian life.
