Indiana National Guardsman Accused of Killing Iraqi Police Officer to Be Court-Martialed

FORT KNOX, Ky. (AP) - An Indiana National Guard soldier accused of murdering an Iraqi police officer will be court-martialed, the Army announced Friday.

Cpl. Dustin Berg, 21, is accused of killing Hussein Kamel Hadi Dawood Al-Dubeidi south of Baghdad in November 2003, then shooting himself. Berg, of Ferdinand, Ind., received a Purple Heart for wounds sustained in the incident.

An investigator testified during an Article 32 hearing last month that Berg changed his story multiple times before admitting he killed the police officer. Special agent Clarence Joubert of the Army Criminal Investigative Division said Berg initially said he was shot by a man in a red turban and white shirt.

Berg's attorney said at the hearing, which is similar to a civilian grand jury hearing, that his client acted in self-defense.

1. WTF are we doing there that our troops have gone so awry?
It's easy for me to say that we shouldn't be there as I post stateside, but I think that our troops know it, too. If this account is true, it seems that a 21yo wounded himself after shooting an Iraqi policeman by mistake. That’s not an “Oops, we goofed” reaction. That’s either cover up training or a desperate action to get the hell out of there.

I can’t say. I’m pretty sure that he regrets killing that guy, at least I hope he does; but I half to wonder about the growing number of self-inflicted injuries.

We don’t belong there as an occupation force.

...in commemoration of 9/11? Even though no Iraqis had anything to do with 9/11?

3. OMG. I hope that's not the case. That's beyond misguided.
That's sick.
