Congressional delegation visits North Slope
Anchorage, Alaska - A congressional delegation visiting Alaska’s North Slope says it's hoping for big things this week.

The delegation visited Barrow on Friday and flew into Alpine oil field on Saturday. The trip comes as Congress gets ready to make a decision on whether or not to move forward with Arctic National Wildlife Refuge this week.

Today, the delegation held a press conference about the trip. The delegation included Sen. Lisa Murkowski, four other senators, Interior Secretary Gale Norton and Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman.

"We know this is our largest on shore, untapped source of energy,” said Norton (right).

“We saw a culture of safety and environmental concern on the existing facilities the likes of which I have never seen,” said Pete Domenici, R-New Mexico.

Sen. Domenici is the chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. He says the group learned about ice roads, production facilities and exploration wells, along with the all the new technology that makes exploration and environmental concerns coexist.

4. Is Pete Domenici
qualified to determine "Culture"? Would not a better term be the 'Quality' of the safety and environmental concern?

Isn't that a job for engineers and geologists?

2. Two big oil companies pulled out of the ANWR-drilling lobby group
The second one was a month or so ago. The two big companies were BP-Amoco and Shell, I recall. I heard it was because production costs were high due to the melting of the permafrost caused by--fossil fuels!

3. The 2,000 acre scam
The Exploiters keep repeating that drilling will only affect 2,000 acres of ANWR. What they aren't telling you is that the "2,000 acres only includes the surface contact area of support posts. John Sununu, R-NH did a calculation that 37 miles of installed pipeline would only count as 1/4 of an acre because that was the total area of where the 12" diameter support posts entered the tundra.
