Local Chapter of Democracy for America wants no privatization
Group meets to strategize against president's Social Security plan

A new local offshoot of a national group that uses the Internet to advance progressive policies is preparing to battle the Bush administration over Social Security.

The Anchorage chapter of Democracy for America, a direct descendant of the cyber-savvy presidential campaign of Howard Dean, fired its opening salvo Wednesday night during an informational gathering at an Anchorage bookstore.

With only 12 people in attendance, it was a modest opening salvo. But former Alaska Attorney General John Havelock urged his fellow participants to take heart.

"Smaller groups than this one have changed the world," Havelock said.
