New Russian Nuclear Missiles Unstoppable — Defense Minister
http://www.mosnews.com/news/2005/03/01/ministermissiles.shtml

There is no missile defense system in the world capable of repulsing the new nuclear missiles that are being developed in Russia, Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said on Tuesday.

“We know exactly what we gain by developing such missiles. There is no defense from these missiles,” Russian Information Agency Novosti quoted the minister as saying. snip

On a different note, Ivanov said Russia was against U.S. military bases on Georgian territory. “We see no sense in those bases,” the minister said.

19. I want another Cold War, this is why....
We need a superpower to act as a check to Bush's imperial ambitions. Bush will be less prone to attack other countries if he thinks that an ICBM will land on top of his head if he misbehaves. This is assuming that Bush is a normal human being.... on the other hand, perhaps Bush really believes that he is the Son of GAWD, in which case he needs to be stopped at all cost.

3. Our Star Wars defense system couldn't stop anything. And the
world knows this, but not to many Americans.

I don't like how everyone is ganging up on us. Between our cowboy pres and vice pres, the propaganda media, and the stupidity of the average American, it looks like a real war coming soon to a neighborhood near you and me.

17. I'm one of the few who has an inkling....
I know it's public knowledge and a source of Great Pride that "we're the strongest Nation on earth", "the world's most formidable military", "unconquerable" and so on.

You find little tid-bits like that everywhere, even in unrelated articles in the newspaper, or even Parade magazine. It's just taken for granted. An interviewer asks a passer-by, "How are we doing militarily?"

The passer-by answers, "Why, we're the most powerful military in the world". He shrugs, can't understand why on earth anyone would ask him such a lame question.

And it's dangerous rhetoric like this that makes me nervous.

I've been reading a series of articles on another news group about how the Pentagon has become "Gravy Train Deluxe", how almost all the appropriations bills go to crony contracts and Insider deals. This has been going on for a long time.

And it's weakened our military. These military contractors charge $$$$$$$millions$$$ for military equipment that could have been made much cheaper, but they're skimming funds.

Also, the quality is crappy because they don't have to worry about quality control. They're on the Gravy Train because they're RumsFool's Buddy, see?

While we spend MORE and MORE, the quality of our military goes DOWN and DOWN.

Think about it: we've been in Iraq for 2 years now. We are supposedly the world's "strongest military" and we are being bested by a country with no military.:smoke:

21. We spend more on military than all the other nations combined.
As for the crap we pay for and the theft, it has been going on for decades. We are the strongest for a war. Although, everyone is assuming Russia is off the list because of the collapse. I really don't want to find out myself.

Putin knows that there is a MORON in the Whitehouse and knows that he has him right where he wants him....that's precisely why he supported Dumbya for re-election... He knew that bush would never really challenge him.

8. Which missile system are they refering to?
There's precious little information. There's a couple missile systems that were never completed or did not enter production before the USSR collapsed. How many of them have been brought back online?

22. I think it's just talk from Russia pretty much telling our idiot leader
that they have missles that can penetrate our missle defense system - because our system doesn't work. Sounds good on the air. Pretty much like Bush telling everyone how great the system is and will stop everything.

24. I have read somewhere that they are referring to a new generation of
Hypersonic Cruise Missiles with mutiple independently targeting capabilities launched from the air or undersea. Some of these are also capable of skimming the surface of the ocean like the Exocet missiles that destroyed a British aircraft carrier in the Falkland Island War.

26. These:
http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/world/russia/rt-2pmu.htm
http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/world/russia/3m14.htm
And recent reports mention a third program of a heavy ICBM,
perhaps mobile, (rail, like the SS-24) to substitute the
SS-18 and SS-24.
I think this thread's news report is about this last missile.
only the Topol-M started developement before the USSR's colapse.

14. I assumed he means something new too.
Nevertheless, sub-launched cruise missiles are hard to stop,
given you get in range with them. Anything that can go NOE at
speed is a problem. And as far as I know, they can't stop
ICBMs well enough to make a difference. I halfway think this
guy is just blowing smoke like the fellows pushing our "missile
defence".

If it's nastier than Sunburns, which we currently have no defense against, ouch.

THANKS BUSH FOR STARTING UP THE WORLD ARMS RACE AGAIN! It was just so BORING without it.

Russia To Beef Up Air Fleet at Kant Base in Kyrgyzstan

I'm thinking those talks went real bad last week. Is the end game is underway. It's obvious we're in Iraq for the long haul and we are threatening the entire world with this cowboy king controlling the oil spigot.

The really scary thing is, if a few international incidents happen, can we expect Bush to manage this? I have real concerns that he could well escalate things until he gets the world war he seems to be wanting...

20. Star Wars Only Works as a Deterrent
Even a successful system is only going to take out a fraction of the missiles in a full-scale attack. And the US knows that.

All the Russians have to do is to make it clear that they know that, and -- bingo -- the deterrent effect is gone. Nice $100B down the drain.
