Dean's money machine to fight Schwarzenegger
Dean's money machine to fight Schwarzenegger
Financial war ahead over special election

John M. Hubbell and Mark Martin, Chronicle Sacramento Bureau

Tuesday, March 8, 2005

Sacramento -- A liberal grassroots network that helped fuel Howard Dean's maverick run for president is crackling back to life to fight Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's ballot initiative drive, another sign that the governor's plans for a special election this year could produce a costly and fiercely partisan battle.

California for Democracy, the state arm of a national group that raised millions of dollars for Dean over the Internet, is planning a high-tech campaign targeting the Republican governor, who wraps ups an out-of-state fund-raising tour in Washington today.

The group's re-emergence came as a committee closely aligned with Schwarzenegger began running television advertisements Monday urging voters to seek out signature-gatherers and sign up.

But volunteers from California for Democracy hope to frustrate those efforts. They plan to use the Web and mobile technology to keep roughly 9,000 supporters abreast of the whereabouts of signature-gatherers for Schwarzenegger ballot initiatives. Organizers say volunteers will then head to those locations to distribute the group's leaflets denouncing the planned special election, which opponents note will cost as much as $70 million.

5. Glad to see it!
And Dean will have the sense not to just use California as an ATM as so many others have.

7. Good for him. This is a critical fight. If they redistrict California
for the Republicans, California will go down the tubes.

My Fundie office mate who voted for Arnie said he's "not too happy with old Arnie" last week after all the nurse and teacher bashing he did. Why is it Republicans never get that the Republican platform is, and always has been, to destroy social benefits??

8. Arnold has not given the specifics of his plans yet people sign up for
them anyway. The Dems here don't want to vote for his plans until he spells them out and Arnold says publicly that the Dems don't do anything concerning them. I smell Rovian tactics here.

10. I was counting on Dean! Thank you from California!
He was one of the very FEW who fought the recall as a national figure. I remember this and thank him deeply.

Dean knows how to call bullshit, but he also knows how to pick his fights.

He said he won't concede the South, and that's smart. One day he's going to pick off a state and CW will change real fast. At some point some red states will become toss-ups and Grover Norquist will shit.

Taking on Schwarzenegger shows he doesn't believe the hype and is bent on making a name for himself at some blowhard, media-darling's expense. He'll pull it off at some point and give a lot of hungry people a reason to vote Dem, if, astonishingly, they didn't have reason already. But I don't blame these people as much as I blame the DLC types who have done nothing but disgrace themselves in light of GOP initiatives
