U.S. to back Europe on incentives to Iran

By Jonathan S. Landay and Warren P. Strobel
Knight Ridder Newspapers

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration has decided to back a European offer of economic incentives to persuade Iran to end a program that could be used to produce fuel for nuclear weapons, U.S. and European officials said Thursday.

The administration's decision to back the EU Three's offer of economic incentives is a major policy reversal and a potential thaw in icy transatlantic relations over a range of issues, including the American-led invasion of Iraq, environmental policy and international law.

The administration planned to unveil its decision Friday, said the officials, who requested anonymity so as not to pre-empt the official announcement.

The Bush administration was expected to announce that it wouldn't oppose EU offers to support Iran's entry to the World Trade Organization and to provide spare parts for Iran's European-made Airbus passenger jets.

7. US Ready to Offer Iran Economic Incentives for Dropping Nuclear Enrichment
http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGB5PDZX56E.html

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush has decided to offer modest economic incentives to Iran in exchange for Tehran's abandoning its nuclear enrichment program, two senior administration officials said Thursday.

As recommended by the European leaders who have been negotiating with Iran, the incentives include possible membership for Iran in the World Trade Organization and the sale of commercial aircraft parts to Tehran.

In exchange for offering incentives, the United States obtained a firm agreement from Britain, France and Germany to refer the matter to the U.N. Security Council for sanctions if Iran does not permanently drop its nuclear program, said the two officials. They spoke on condition of anonymity.

The United States agreed not to oppose talks on WTO membership for Iran - a process that normally takes years - and to permit the aircraft part sales, they said. The part sales would be considered on a case-by-case basis, one official said.

9. But the hypocrites freaked out over fuel oil to NK.
They have refused bilateral talks with North Korea or financial incentives. Shrub Inc blew all the work that the Clinton administration did in breaking down the barriers with North Korea. I am beginning to believe that they really want NK to develop a nuclear missile. It would then give justification for continuing their Son-of-Star-Wars missile defense boondoggle.
