WASHINGTON -- Elizabeth Edwards -- the wife of former vice presidential candidate John Edwards -- had surgery Monday to remove a cancerous growth the size of a half-dollar.

Her family said she's making progress in her treatment for breast cancer, having already had four months of chemotherapy to shrink the mass. A family spokeswoman said the chemotherapy reduced the tumor "dramatically."

John Edwards sent an e-mail to friends and supporters saying his wife is "resting comfortably." The former Democratic senator from North Carolina called the prognosis "very positive."

A spokeswoman said Elizabeth Edwards will now have five to six weeks of radiation treatment, starting in early April.
