Hate campaign awaits Bin Laden's 'spiritual ambassador in Europe'

The man who has been called Osama bin Laden's "spiritual ambassador in Europe" is likely to be the target of a sustained hate campaign after his release from Belmarsh.

Lurid headlines denounced his imminent release yesterday, but Abu Qatada and four other foreign terror suspects remained in detention last night despite securing a judge's agreement to their release on bail.

Lawyers for Mr Qatada had expected the Muslim cleric would be freed to be reunited with his family at their west London home under the strict conditions set by a court. Instead, he and his fellow detainees were secretly transferred from Belmarsh to Colnbrook secure immigration centre in Middlesex.

The Home Office refused to say why the men had not been immediately released on the strict terms set out by the senior judge at the Special Immigration Appeals Commission (Siac).
