Removal of Spanish dictator's statue sparks protest
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L17100503.htm

MADRID, March 17 (Reuters) - Hundreds of sympathisers of former Spanish dictator Francisco Franco, many making the Fascist salute, protested on Thursday over the night-time removal of the last statue of Franco in the Spanish capital.

A crowd, chanting in favour of Franco and against the Socialist government, gathered at the spot where the statue of Franco sitting on a horse was lifted away by a crane in the early hours of Thursday.

The bronze statue had stood near a complex of ministries in northern Madrid for nearly 50 years.

Some in the crowd, including both young and old people, raised their right arms in the Fascist salute while others sang the anthem of Spain's far-right Falange party.

10. Madrid's Last Franco Statute
<snip> The AFP news agency reported a group of around 100 people gathered in the dark, some clapping and applauding the statue’s removal. <snip>

A spokesman for Spain's Development Ministry said the statue was "not appreciated by the majority of the people" and had been removed as part of a larger public works programme. <snip>
