Iowa's five-month reprieve from presidential politics will come to a screeching halt this week as President Bush and former Democratic vice presidential nominee John Edwards expect to make their first returns since the November election.
Bush is scheduled to visit Cedar Rapids on Wednesday to discuss Social Security reform, his first Iowa trip since Nov. 1, the day before he carried Iowa en route to his re-election.
While Bush has begun his final term and plans to stress his chief policy goal, Edwards will contend more with speculation about his political future when he visits the Des Moines area Thursday and Friday.

Edwards, who launched his own spirited bid for the 2004 presidential nomination in Iowa, is scheduled to make several stops that will keep the potential 2008 presidential candidate in front of party faithful and local news media. However, aides say he will address policies aimed at curbing poverty, an issue he championed as a candidate.
