Reuters: Independent-Minded Politician Jerry Brown to Wed
Independent-Minded Politician Jerry Brown to Wed

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Former California governor and three-time presidential candidate Jerry Brown has long shunned convention, but the lifelong bachelor said on Monday that he would wed within the next month or two.

Now mayor of Oakland, Brown, 67, plans to tie the knot with long-time companion Anne Gust, 47, an executive vice president at clothing maker Gap Inc, although no date has been set.

"How do I put this? I am somewhat independent," Brown said in an interview. "My last institutional commitment is when I took vows of poverty, chastity and obedience in the Jesuit Seminary and that was a long time ago. ... I walked out the door in 1960."...

***

"I've known this woman for 15 years; we've been living together for many years in Oakland, and I thought now was the right time, and so did she," he said....Sen. Dianne Feinstein is expected to officiate at their wedding.

Democrat Brown is also seeking a new job: he is running for attorney general of California next year but said he is likely to work from the San Francisco area if he wins that election.

5. Jerry Brown has always worked for Democratic Party values...
...in whatever way was available to him. I'm sure he would continue to do so as California Attorney General, and to be honest, I'd much rather have a Democrat doing that job than any Republican. Wouldn't you?:dilemma:

6. whatever way huh?
take a look at his track record in Oakland

http://www.ratical.org/ratville/JFK/JohnJudge/militarizeEdu.html

and when George Will endorses your practices, you have to wonder how much of a Democrat you truly are

In all honesty, a political opportunist like Brown is no better than a Republican--at least you know where the Republican stands unlike Brown

15. Jerry Brown decriminalized homosexuality in California, Dwickham
In one of his first acts as Governor, Jerry Brown decriminalized homosexuality in the Golden State way back in the 1970's, Dwickham.

Texas, on the other hand, was still fighting until last year (2004)in the Supreme Court to defend its Sodomy Laws.

Brown's watershed, bold and fearless standing up for homosexuals who were despised and discriminated in the most horrific ways even here in California deserves great respect.

One would think that a professed gay man living in California like you Dwickham would appreciate Brown's heroic and historic action as our Governor which caused him great, great political trouble.

You call him a "political opportunist".

You should be really, really ashamed of yourself.

Really!

16. He also vetoed the death penalty and appointed Rose Bird.
He was the best governor California ever had. He's going to be the best attorney general it ever had, too.

7. love that new icon...
I used to really like brown... but by the time he ran in 1992 I was growing skeptical of his continual transformations.

Liked the idea of his becoming Mayor of Oakland.
Found the departure from the party.... interesting.

As such - find his refound democratic roots - a bit... well let's call it a question of trustworthiness.

However an opportunistic Brown is still probably better than anything the GOP in Cal would drag up.

17. I Voted for Brown in 1992
Edited on Tue Mar-29-05 09:42 PM by Crisco
I recall from the run-up to the convention, there was some cloaked innuendo regarding his sexual preferences. If the internet had been around then, it probably would have gotten very nasty, I suspect.

12. She's the single mother of two adopted children --
"Ronstadt bought a home in Tucson several years ago, after having spent more than 20 years in Los Angeles and 10 more in San Francisco. Having adopted two children--a boy and a girl--she wanted to return to where she was raised and where her family resides. In Tucson, her brother was once police chief, her cousin a city official, and her nephew a city council member. The downtown bus pavilion is known as the Ronstadt Transit Center.

Ronstadt is the single mother of two young adopted children, Carlos and Mary."

9. Guess he doesn't want to give up living in the worst part of Oakland
Though I guess the worst part is looking great these days thanks to him. It's about an hour commute from Sacramento.
