U.S. Incomes Fell, Poverty Rose in 2002

U.S. Incomes Fell, Poverty Rose in 2002

By Jonathan Weisman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, September 27, 2003; Page A01

U.S. household incomes declined for the third year in a row, and nearly 1.7 million people in the country fell into poverty as the economy recovered sluggishly from the 2001 recession, the U.S. Census Bureau reported yesterday.

The poverty rate rose, for the second straight year, to 12.1 percent in 2002, from 11.7 percent the year before. Even so, the poverty rate last year remained below the average for the previous two decades.

"The reach of the jobless recovery really jumps out at you in these numbers," said Jared Bernstein, a senior economist at the Economic Policy Institute. "We're looking at another protracted weak recovery where the disconnect between economic growth and household income lasts for years."

1. So Incomes decline and poverty escalates in America

meanwhile...

the rich see their net worth grow by T E N percent this past year.

Now I am sure that there are enough freep-lurkers out there that are capable of rudimentary mathematics and that have either been part of he downsized or know somebody that has been.

Do the math freeps! Do you think that we are better now?
Do you want this BS to continue with a CEO failure of a president, or are you content in your ignorance knowing that you will be lied to over and over and over...

Un-fucking-believeable.

What we need is another tax cut to cement us and our economy firmly into the ground.

``I didn't get this sense of desperation a year ago,'' Davidson said. ``I hear much more now people saying, `I have no food in the house. I don't know where my next meal is coming from.' ''

``Everyone's taking a bump down, and you haven't seen the worst of it,'' Syracuse University economist Tim Smeeding told The Associated Press.

4. The "poverty level" is ridiculous ~$19,000 for family of FOUR?!?!??!?

That's not poverty that is dirt poor. $8,800 for a single? Hell if you rent alone is $400 that accounts for half that money.

5. Laid off from a job in 2001...
It took me until 2003 to find another one. This one is below my skill level and I took a $15000 salary cut but at least I have benefits again.

I have at least 5 friends that have had the same thing happen to them.
Middle aged people living with parents. Maybe when this happens to a Repug, they'll wake up and smell the deficit.
