Federal judge rejects lawsuits over LAX shootings

Families of two people shot by a terrorist at El Al counter in 2002 said city did not provide protection.

A judge has thrown out lawsuits against the city of Los Angeles by the families of two people shot to death during the July 4, 2002, terrorist attack at Los Angeles International Airport.

The complaints, filed by the families of El Al Israel Airlines employee Victoria Hen, 25, of Chatsworth and Jacob Aminov, 46, a North Hollywood diamond broker and father of eight, sought $87.5 million and claimed that the city failed to provide adequate security during the shooting by an Egyptian man at the El Al ticket counter.

U.S. District Judge Alicemarie Stotler ruled Monday that "public entities are immune from liability for injuries from an act or omission by the public entity or public employees, except as provided by statute."
