Schiavo obit mistakenly appears on Web
----------------------------------------------
TAMPA, Fla. - A draft of CBSNews.com's obituary for Terri Schiavo mistakenly appeared on the Internet for a few hours, a network official said Wednesday.

The incomplete story did not appear on the network's Web site, but it could be found by an Internet search engine because it was inadvertently saved in an online file, said CBSNews.com news director Mike Sims.

Sims said the draft was saved late Monday and removed a few hours later, after the error was identified early Tuesday.

"It should have been saved off-line. We certainly do feel badly about that," Sims said.

The story was posted on the Web site for radio talk show host Glenn Beck.

1. Mistakes happen and I suppose this just that at least I hope so but
of course many people have their obits written long in advance so I see no biggie here.

2. Is it true that the obits of aging celebrities,
even the healthy ones, are written in advance by news outlets? I'd always heard that, and when one of them dies, the outlets are johnny-on-the-spot with the life-story.

They keep them on file and update them periodically. And not only celebrities, but any prominent figure in politics, science, etc.

6. Two or three years ago, Bob Hope's obit draft was....
accidentally posted on a network news website. The info got passed around like a virus. It wasn't until after a moment of silence had been held in his honor in Congress that it was discovered that Bob Hope was still with us.

I'm not the ony one that remembers this, am I?

8. Nope. I remember that.
It was very embarrassing for the Congressman who started it.

7. yes
I do not fault them for writing pre-obits - that's just prudent - but to leake them prematurely, that is a big gaffe in very poor taste
