..... Classmates Express Outrage at Arrest of Girl, 16, as a Terror Threat
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/09/nyregion/09suicide.html

At Heritage High School in East Harlem, where the student idiom is hip-hop and salsa, the 16-year-old Guinean girl stood out, but not just because she wore Islamic dress. She was so well liked that when she ran for student body president, she came in second to one of her best friends - the Christian daughter of the president of the parent-teacher association, Deleen P. Carr.

Now Ms. Carr, a speech pathologist who calls herself "a typical American citizen," is as outraged as the girl's teachers and classmates, who have learned that the girl and another 16-year-old are being called would-be suicide bombers and are being held in an immigration detention center in Pennsylvania.

"They have painted this picture of her as this person that is trying to destroy our way of life, and I know in my heart of hearts that this is bogus," said Ms. Carr, who welcomed the Guinean girl to her house daily and knows her family well. "I feel like, how dare they? She's a minor, and even if she's not a citizen, she has rights as a human being."

According to a government document provided to The New York Times by a federal official earlier this week, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has asserted that both girls are "an imminent threat to the security of the United States based on evidence that they plan to be suicide bombers." No evidence was cited, and federal officials will not comment on the case.

1. "both girls are "an imminent threat to the security of the United States "
Well, we have the FBI's version!!

.......Its mysteries deepened as teachers and neighbors gave details of the Guinean girl's life, like the jeans she wore under her Muslim garb, her lively classroom curiosity about topics like Judaism and art and her after-school care for four younger siblings while her parents, illegal immigrants who have lived in the United States since 1990, eked out a living.

"I just can't fathom this," said her art teacher, Kimberly Lane, who has repeatedly called the youth detention center but like Ms. Carr was not allowed to speak to the girl, who has no lawyer. Among the unanswered questions they raised was why, if she was really a suspect, no F.B.I. agent had shown up to search her school locker or question her classmates, who sent her letters of support.

"This is a girl who's been in this country since she was 2 years old," Ms. Lane said. "She's just a regular teenager - like, two weeks ago her biggest worry was whether she'd done her homework or studied for a science test."

Until now, attention has focused on the other 16-year-old, a Bangladeshi girl reared in Queens who could not deal with the hurly-burly of her West Side high school and withdrew into home schooling. Yesterday, on a motion of the government, an immigration judge closed the Bangladeshi girl's bond hearing to the public and adjourned it to next Thursday, said Troy Mattes, a lawyer who is taking over the case but has yet to meet her.........

2. It's hard to imagine the thought processes of these federal officials.
I can see them calling a meeting:

"OK, gentlemen, Here's the facts. Her parents are illegal immigrants. She's a Muslim. Sound like a potential suicide bomber to you?"

Yup, no doubt about it. She's definitely out to destroy our way of life. Better play it safe. Lock her up indefinitely. No need for charges. And no lawyers!"

4. I certainly hope
one of the people who knows how to get movies made and stories told will one day do a documentary on all this silliness to remind people in the future just how stupid people acted during this administration. What a paranoid bumbling bunch of idiots. They did nothing to stop real terrorists (even got the terrorist's family safely out of the country while no other flights were allowed), yet they can sure seek out nonthreathening people and arrest them for what they see as thought crimes. I mean if you think about it, even if the girls had even joked about it, this is so 1984. Arrested for thought crimes. Worst part of it is, the thoughts are in the heads of the idiots who patrol this country nowadays.

Another thing. That's all we need. The <idea> of suicide bombers in America to start the idea up in the <real> terrorists' heads that this would be the thing to do to us next. Great. Perfect. What will chimpy and his fellow planet of the apes gorilla henchmen think of next to terrorize us?

22. AND, what better way to get the idea out there
so some kids will imitate the idea, and presto, self-fulfilling prophecy.

it took a columbine to actually happen for others to want to copy it.

now, our government is offering the terrorists options.

this is what they were going to do, this is how they were going to do it.

and then someone actually tries it.

and then they will say, SEE, WE WERE RIGHT!

they WANT this to happen so they can use it as an excuse to crackdown even further on everyone's civil rights. they have their eyes on patriot acts 8, 9 and 10.

8. This kind of thing made my blood boil after 9/11/01.
Now it just leadens my stomach with sickness and sadness. Back in 2001, I screamed "This doesn't HAPPEN in the United States!" The difference between now and then is that now, I know better.

I didn't give birth to my daughter and raise her for her to have to live in a totalitarian police state. It just gets worse day after day.

This is some other place. Doubtless the fascists are getting bolder. 'The people' looked the other way when this was happening in our name in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, and around the world, so why should we be surprised when it begins to happen right here?

This disgusts me ... and meanwhile, the real domestic terrorists--like the KKK, Aryan Nations, and the radical right militias--are removed from the domestic terrorist list.

anything negative about us white folks' historically atrocious behavior, but there are at least slight improvements.

There was no more than an sentence in my history textbooks (70's) on the internment camps. Most of what I learned came from hearing my mother talk about her friend disappearing.

My daughter's 9th grade textbook has at least a page on internment camps with some thoughtful discussion (and of course I shared her grandmother's story with her so she could put a real face on the experience).

But it's now a prison.:(
What is the saddest thing of all, is that all the men who fought the legitimate wars, sacrificed their lives for our way of life--for us to be free--are quickly becoming victims of this administration. They are now victims of blood for oil--just like our present soldiers.:(
Our freedoms they fought and died for are dwindling each and every day.

13. To me, a scary thought, is that for many americans -
unless the personally know the individuals who get caught up in these awful scenarios - will read such an item and think... "well the fbi MUST have some information that they aren't telling us..." implicitly still believing that nothing is wrong... and quickly forgetting the story. No outrage. No alarm bells ringing off the hook. Just an assumption that the govt knows more than we do and must be acting in good faith. This is the attitude which lead to so many americans STILL believing (based on all the propoganda - but actually swallowing it and internalizing it) that Iraq was tied to 911 and had WMDs.

I hope the public attention to this story will force a quick and reasonable resolution to the girls' situation (eg they get released). Outrageous story.

(a) Deleen P. Carr, 16-year-old student in East Harlem; or

(2) Eric Rudolph, convicted bomber of at least four facilities, including the Olympic Village in Atlanta.

You have 15 minutes to complete this part of the test.

19. I was just about to post the same question after reading through this
story and thread....

Incredible isn't it....these girls are considered "terror threats" and Eric Rudolph isn't even referred to as what he is - A Terrorist....They refer to Eric Rudolph as a "former soldier", a "survivalist", "opponent of Abortion Clinics" etc. but I have not once heard him referred to as a Terrorist. I guess christian white dudes born in the USA of pure grade A kick ass America don't get called Terrorists, especially if they are bombing Abortion Providers or Lesbian Bars....

But, if your someone who is Muslim, skin color anything darker than ivory and your parents came from another country, I guess your a "terror threat". Gee, do you think the FBI and Homeland Security Dept will "cut" a deal with these teenagers?

Our fascists wave the American flag and also wear crosses. The War President decreed a Crusade years ago.

Civil and human rights must be restored or this will be repeated everywhere-it's like the McCarthy era and Salem witch hunt hysteria combined. PNAC. Homeland Security. The PATRIOT ACT. Gonzales the Torturer has followed Ashcroft the Witchfinder and Admiral Poindexter IS watching you with total information awareness.

God help US all, some people are still apathetic or in denial.
This is a fascist group, these neo-conservative traitors.
Straussians. Vulcans. The shadow government of The War President.
Liars. War criminals. War Profiteers. Employers of thugs and mercenaries backed by the abuse of the US military in the Rumsfeld/Myers DoD, a DoD still undergoing "transformation".

There is an intelligence war today to get the truth out about what "transformation" is all about. It is all about American militaristic fascism now.

That's what I think about these "potential suicide bomber" allegations from a bunch of fucking RW criminal liars and the US Taliban of The War President.

20. Crime: Its Cause and Treatment, by Clarence Darrow 1922
"It does not necessarily follow that the country is best where the people are the most obedient. Complete obedience leads to submission, to aggression and to despotism. Doubtless China has fewer crimes than England. The power of resistance is so crushed that no one thinks of defying a master, resenting an injury, violating a rule, claiming any personal rights or protesting against caste, age, or privilege."

Soon we'll all have been born criminals. We'll be guilty just for having walked the Earth.

I was thinking about the P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act this AM and how incredibly easy it would be to end up in prison for the rest of your life. All the feds would need to do is plant some drugs or documents or porn or whatever in your house during one of their 'sneak-and-peek' parties, you wouldn't even know it's there until they come to haul you away. What defense could you have? I didn't know?

25. BUSHCO is "trying to destroy our way of life", along
with millions of Americans who are more than willing to follow along. I'll never get over how flabbergasted I was by the reaction of our government and most of the country to 9/11. When it happened, I was three hours away from boarding a plane to Norway. I watched what everyone else watched on TV, and got mad as hell! NO WAY would I let a handful of terrorists manipulate me! I tried desperately to get on another plane in the following days-fuck them! I was going on my trip!! When my plane was grounded on 9/11 I decided to take care of some banking business I had been putting off instead. When I came into the bank and signed in, one of the employees said "I can't believe you came in today...DON'T YOU KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON"??? I said "of course I do, and I'm not going to allow those thugs to change one damn thing about the way I conduct my life. If I do, they win. Why shouldn't I sign my loan papers today? The attacks are in NYC and DC...not Orlando Florida"!!

I talked to a very liberal friend last night (who only gets the news from the MSM) and she believes that EVERYONE else in America is with * 100%, and that she really did "stop being safe" on 9/11. I just wish I knew of SOME WAY to make people like her snap out of it!

but I'm glad to see that someone beat me to it...and this had 6 recommends for greatest story...I added a seventh...I have more information about this is at a diary at daily kos...if you are a member there please recommend it...(but I'm adding it here too)

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/4/9/7440/37974

he New York Post has more on this story:
http://www.nypost.com/news/regionalnews/42349.htm

2 KIDS TANGLED IN 'TERROR' NET By DOUG MONTERO, MURRAY WEISS and DAN MANGAN

"Two teenage New York girls are in prison as illegal aliens after stumbling into a federal probe of recruiters trying to sign up homicide bombers, The Post has learned."

"The arrests took place after authorities decided it would be better to lock up the girls than wait and see if they decided to become terrorists willing to die for a cause, law-enforcement sources said."

Both girls were "under surveillance for several weeks after first becoming known to investigators."

"Both had visited an unidentified mosque where anti-American and extreme fundamentalist rhetoric had been spewed."

It also says that in a notebook one of the girls talked of suicide.

Adem Carroll, an activist with the Islamic Circle of North America: "The government, he said, "could be creating an image of a war on terror without reality."

Another story:
http://www.centredaily.com/mld/centredaily/sports/horse_racing/kentucky_derby/11340281.htm

Two girls held in terror plot The Associated Press By Tom Hays

"The girls -- one from Bangladesh, one from Guinea -- were picked up by authorities March 24 and put in a detention center in Leesport, the officials said."

"Two law enforcement officials, both speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the case is pending, confirmed the content of the document but suggested that it may have exaggerated the threat."

"Federal immigration agents investigated her home and discovered an essay about suicide and Islam on her computer, Carroll said.

"The case seemed to be "an investigation that's gotten out of hand, like a lot of other so-called terror investigations," Carroll told the paper."

First New York Times Story also by Nina Bernstein

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/08/nyregion/08suicide.html

"A few months later, when the teenager stayed out overnight for the first time, the father, fearing an elopement, went to the police for help."

"It is a decision he regrets deeply. His daughter and another 16-year-old girl are now described by the government as would-be suicide bombers and are being held in a detention center for illegal immigrants in Pennsylvania. He is sure that his visit to the police set off the F.B.I. investigation that led to a chilling assertion, in a government document, that the girls are "an imminent threat to the security of the United States based on evidence that they plan to be suicide bombers." Family and friends call that absurd."

This part is very different from the aforementioned stories:

"The mother of the Bangladeshi girl, conveying her daughter's account, said the two girls met for the first time at 26 Federal Plaza after her daughter's arrest. But when the other girl, a Guinean who was facing deportation with her family, noticed her daughter's veil, she gave her a traditional Muslim greeting, and federal agents seemed to think they were friends. The second girl ended up in the Pennsylvania detention center, too."

This is fucked.

"There are no firm time limits on immigration detention, so the burden is on the girls to prove that they are not potential suicide bombers, rather than on the government to prove they are."

"Indeed, the evidence is withheld from the girls and anyone who represents them under a "protective order" that F.B.I. investigators obtained from the immigration court, according to an April 1 motion to continue the secrecy, signed by Jeffrey T. Bubier, assistant chief counsel for the Department of Homeland Security in Philadelphia."

Can it get worse?

"The Bangladeshi girl's father, who sells cheap watches wholesale and, he said, earns less than $16,000 a year, hired a New York immigration lawyer for $2,500. But the lawyer declined to attend her first hearing, according to a motion he filed seeking to handle the matter "telephonically," because of "time constraints.""

"She said she did not realize when investigators showed up at home on March 4 that they were F.B.I. agents, because they claimed they were from a youth center that helped families get along and were simply following up the father's complaint to the police. She sent the female agent upstairs to talk with her daughter. Twenty days later, immigration agents arrived at dawn and took the teenager away."

Mutherfuckers

"Her daughter, she said, told her during a brief detention visit that F.B.I. interrogators had warned that unless she confessed to terrorist ties, her two youngest siblings, who are American citizens, would be placed in foster care and her parents sent back to Bangladesh without them."

42. What your not allowed to write essays?
Federal immigration agents investigated her home and discovered an essay about suicide and Islam on her computer,...

"Both had visited an unidentified mosque where anti-American and extreme fundamentalist rhetoric had been spewed."

She is a student, seems like a smart cookie too. Also from the sounds of it, a tolerant youth, who is well intergated into American society.

Here's a hypothosys, she was doing a research paper. She has probably heard many reports about islamic suicide bombers. Curious as to why any muslim would want to do such a thing she decides her paper should adress the religion of Islam and a possible correlation to suicide. She is a muslim, but like many muslims she, does not have the mindset of a radical fundementalist. She feels that in order to gain insight into the mind of a potential suicide bomber, she must attend at least one fundemental religious service. The mosque happened to be under FBI surveilance, and the FBI, decided to be thorough, but not that thurough...

Or her and another muslim aquaintance were "shopping" for a new mosque, much like christians do when they are dissatified with their regular church.

Edit: I know most of you will think I'm a jackass, but I have to make jokes. Otherwise I would have broken down crying years ago.

She appeared to be intended to influence the policy of a goverment through coercion, ship her to jordan to be tortured!!!

`(5) the term `domestic terrorism' means activities that--

`(B) appear to be intended--

`(i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population;

`(ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion;

38. This is a BULLSHIT case, and the GOV'T proves it by its actions.
Or, I should say, LACK of actions:

Quote:
"Among the unanswered questions they raised was why, if she was really a suspect, no F.B.I. agent had shown up to search her school locker or question her classmates...

That tells you how seriously the FBI believes she's a terrorist.

39. just another setup
several more reports like this (with the frothing media coverage) should instill enough fear to justify the iran war in June. These neo-cons should all be shot.

note to FBI - I wasn't serious about the part

62. I wonder
How soon it's gonna be before the FBI sends her to Saudi Arabia or Israel or another "torture friendly" ally to get that information that obviously she must have -- being a dark-skinned Muslim and all. Kind of like how some people think that all gays in the same metropolitan area must know one another.

43. They may not be able to release these girls.

Our ordinary prisons are known for rapes and abuse, but the prisons for terror suspects are even worse.

If the government has already raped and tortured these two young women in order to gather information or extract confessions, they won't be able to release them. They'll have learned first hand what our government is all about, will have nothing more to live for, and could easily become suicide bombers if released, even if it was the furthest thing from their thoughts before the arrests.

47. This is really shocking, even for the bushco..
How many others are held without access to lawyers on trumped up charges because of the patriot act and these demented fools in the government. As the article states, if these girls are such a terrorist threat, why has no investigation been done at the school and their lockers not searched yet? The only reason people know about this is because one was integrated into school life and was missed by her peers and teachers. If she would have gone into homeschooling like her friend, they would have disappeared in silence. I feel very bad for all involved. It must be completely traumatic for them.

Edited on Sat Apr-09-05 11:51 PM by IronLionZion
I think 16 year old girls would feel terrorized by this incident. Shall we arrest Michael Chertoff for terrorizing these poor girls?

Hmm...if they have evidence on how to tell if someone is going to be a suicide bomber, then why don't they share it? That info might come in handy. Or, they just don't have it. Who needs evidence when you have racism?

Arresting teenage girls, coercing a confession by threatening her parents, and refusing them legal counsel are outrages that shouldn't happen in America.

55. It is almost impossible to grasp if you haven't experienced it personally.

This is fascism. We have a dictator. We have no Constitutional rights that are worth anything if we need them. (For those who think that the right to bear arms is still worth something, don't think that the government would hesitate to bomb your entire block if they can't outgun you--or your entire city for that matter.)

As they said in the Gulag, "Me today, you tomorrow."

But as our Constitutional rights have eroded, it has always hurt other people, not us.......yet. And by the time it hurts us and we understand it, it will be too late. That's how it works. That's how it has always worked. Fascist dictators pick on the most vulnerable groups first like ethnic or religious minorities, the disabled, the poor, etc., because they are just about defenseless and most people don't really care about them.

There are still survivors of the Nazis who live here and are seeing the whole thing happen all over again--only this time instead of Jews, it is Moslems. Did you know that both Arabs and Jews are Semites, and that anti-Semitism can be against either or both? Did you know that sometimes both Jews and Moslems can themselves be fascists too?

How do you think that those who survived the death squads in Central America and managed to come here feel about seeing the same people who ran those death squads (Iran-Contra) back in power?

The people running our government have no respect for the Geneva Convention, the United Nations, the World Court, or our own Constitution. They're in it for glory, which to them means how many millions of people they can kill and how many billions of dollars they can steal. This is serious business, as they are competing against historical figures like Genghiz Khan, Attila the Hun, Hitler, Stalin, and many others. They intend to go down in history as more brutal, more ruthless, more warlike, and therefore, in patriarchal terms, more "glorious" than anyone else.

Liberals are such nice people, we're just like the baby seals that some of us have been trying to protect from slaughter. We'll probably never know what hit us.

53. "...she has rights as a human being."
Before November 4, 2000 she had rights. In fact, we all used to have more rights, citizen or otherwise. My comment tonight is a simple one: The arrest and the accusations thrown at these girls are nothing more than an attempt by the Homeland Security Agency to continue it's propaganda campaigns of fear and hatred.
