WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Paul Crotty, an attorney who has worked with top Democrats and Republicans, on Monday became the first of President Bush's 20 renominated judicial nominees to win Senate confirmation.
On a bipartisan vote of 95-0, the Republican-led Senate approved Crotty for a seat on the U.S. district court in the state of New York.

Seven of the renominated candidates were among the 10 filibustered judicial hopefuls. The others were left hanging when the previous Congress ended last year.
Democrats have long pushed for a Senate vote on Crotty, saying they were ready to make him the 205th Bush judicial nominee to be confirmed. Most of the other renominated judicial candidates are expected to face a Senate fight.

"Mr. Crotty's nomination demonstrates that when President Bush wants to appoint non-ideological judges to the federal bench, he can get a Senate consensus to do so," said Sen. Edward Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat.
