Egyptian torture claims backed
A government-backed report has supported widespread allegations of torture by Egyptian police and security forces.

In its surprisingly frank inaugural annual report, the Egyptian Supreme Council for Human Rights (ESCHR) said the country’s 24-year-old state of emergency was being abused by officials.

It said the legislation provided a loophole which has prevented some Egyptians from enjoying their right to personal security.

With presidential and parliamentary elections looming later this year, the ESCHR called for the abolition of the emergency law. <snip>
