"There is not enough military in America," Cleland said while scanning the room with his finger, "without a wholesale draft and all of you to occupy the Middle East."
Cleland's comments prompted one student in attendance to question how the former senator squared his statements with the elections in Iraq and optimistic statements by Iraq's newly elected president.
"We have opened up a ground war in the Middle East we cannot win," Cleland said. "We are creating more terrorists than we can jail or kill."
