Army investigates claims witnesses were harassed

The latest complaints came this week, after the special court-martial of Sgt. 1st Class David H. Price, who admitted Monday to abuses and had his rank reduced by one grade.

The complaints refer to "remarks and gestures" made to Army privates, said Connie Shaffery, a public affairs officer at Fort Knox. "The investigation was initiated as soon as (military officials) were made aware," Shaffery said.

The mother of one of the soldiers said her son is shocked at the way he was treated after reporting the alleged abuse.

"He's so disillusioned with the Army now," Cheryl Kevan-Riffe said of her son, Pvt. Jacob Kevan. "And now he wants out."

Kevan has completed basic training, she said. Kevan-Riffe, who lives in California, said her son told her that a drill sergeant this week screamed in his face that "Nobody's protecting you guys now."
