Report: Almost 11 Million Children in Developing Countries Die Before Age 5

WASHINGTON (AP) - Almost 11 million children in developing countries die each year before the age of 5, most of them from causes that are preventable in wealthier countries, the World Bank said in a report released Sunday.

The causes include acute respiratory infection, diarrhea, measles and malaria, which together account for 48 percent of child deaths in the developing world, according to the report -called World Development Indicators.

"Rapid improvement before 1990 gave hope that mortality rates for infants and children would be cut by two-thirds in the following 25 years," the report said. "But progress slowed almost everywhere in the 1990s."

The report said only 33 countries are on track to reach the 2015 goal of reducing child mortality rates by two-thirds from its 1990 levels. It said only two regions - Latin America and the Caribbean and Europe and Central Asia - may be on track to achieve the target.

1. We have truly lost our way
when such a situation is not a call to arms. These statistics are so obviously the results of much of what we care about as Dems.

6. A doctor once told me that in many countries in Africa, children who could
not yet reach over the top of their heads and touch their ear on the opposite side were not counted in any census because the likelyhood that they would die before their arms grew long enough.

9. Eleven million children a year die....
This shouldn't be happening at all, let alone NOT BE A FIRST PRIORITY. This is sobering. All people who are not doing what they can, should ask for forgiveness, from any God of their chosing, or from those childrens families themselves... but forgiveness nonetheless. I ask for it myself. I complained when I was embarassed to go to the pantry at Catholic Charities to feed my family. At least I could go there. These families have nowhere to go.

My nine year old watches Save the children on Sundays, offering up his allowance for a child every month. He started watching this since he was so very young, maybe five, or six years old. Sundays I'd sleep on the couch in the a.m. and think he's watching Sesame, then he'd tell me about the children. At first I thought I'd better stay awake and he shouldn't see this. Then I realized he is genuinely so loving he feels the urgency to give because its needed and for no other reason. How beautiful is that? Sesame can't teach all that. Kids can teach adults very big lessons.

..they promote birth control because his religious nut job base believes in the "Culture Of Life"'. May the whole bunch of them burn in hell for this. Please if there is a God let these people allowing this to happen burn in hell forever. I beg you. I will even volunteer to lead the way just to make sure they all get there.

13. It's an annual Holocaust on a grander scale
But people are focused on smaller numbers: 10 in a Minnesota high school, 1 in a Florida hospital.... Sickening.

As with everything else, please do what you can to help, even in a small way.
