Berlusconi Defies Ally; Refuses to Resign, Form New Government
Edited on Mon Apr-18-05 03:09 PM by rocknation
April 18 (Bloomberg) -- Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi defied an ally in his four-party coalition and refused to resign to form a new government after losing 12 out of 14 regional elections.

"I'll do a reshuffle and then we'll see how parliament reacts," Berlusconi told reporters in Rome today after meeting with President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi. "This time the surprise is on you."

The debate in parliament, which will include a confidence vote for the government, will start in the Senate this week, Berlusconi said. If he can't muster enough support to survive the confidence vote, the government would fall.

4. He repaid the Lega Nord debts personally some years ago
... and just made a truckload of money selling part of his shares of the media empires he owns. I'm sure the UDC people have already received their payment.
Berlusca is evil, but not stupid.
