Ohio Senator Clashes Over Bush Nominee

By MALIA RULON
The Associated Press
Tuesday, April 19, 2005; 8:35 PM

WASHINGTON - The Ohio senator who surprised fellow Republicans on Tuesday with his sudden concerns about President Bush's nominee for ambassador to the United Nations is known as a maverick.

Sen. George Voinovich was the rare Republican holdout against Bush's 2003 tax cut plan, an administration priority. Despite intense lobbying from the White House, he stood firm. The president had to settle for a smaller tax cut package.

This time, inside the packed Senate Foreign Relations Committee room, Voinovich took another stand against the administration by suggesting the committee delay a vote on Bush's nomination of John Bolton as U.N. ambassador.

"I've heard enough today that I don't feel comfortable about voting for Mr. Bolton," Voinovich told fellow committee members. He previously had said he would vote for Bolton.

1. Have you no decency?
It sounds as though this Republican can't stomach Bolton's outrageous behavior. I applaud him. But I have nothing but contempt for those Republicans who don't have the decency to say that Bolton's nomination is absurdly inappropriate.

3. Still...
We can still be thankful for his actions today, it doesn't mean one has to vote for him. I'll still trust you as an Ohioan that he can't be trusted, though!

4. I still say Bolton wins
But unlike A-Gonz or Rice this will not just be a symbolic no vote. There is a realistic chance he could be defeated.
