Australia backs arrest of nine citizens in Bali
Australian officials spent 10 weeks helping Indonesia mount a case against nine Australians who could now face the death penalty following their arrest for allegedly trying to smuggle heroin out of Bali, the government said yesterday.
"People have to know that trafficking in heroin and trafficking in drugs brings the death penalty in many countries, particularly in Asia," Foreign Minister Alexander Downer told Australia's Nine TV network. "If people don't understand that, they certainly will now."

Prime Minister John Howard said he strongly endorsed the joint operation that netted the arrests -- in a government response that has been in stark contrast to its appeals to help Australian drug suspect Schapelle Corby.

1. Ye Gods..I thought it was going to
be about the bombings in the Bali nightclub.

I don't know what's happened here but DEATH seems a LITTLE extreme.

2. Especially when you drugs are pretty much legal in some European
countries, Canada.

I'm sure what the conservatives have done with 'drugs' is more to stop a revolution so they don't lose power and secondly so the American alcohol companies keep their cash box full. I really think the 60s-70s scared the shit out of the Power Elite. Remember then there was NO communications method for moral. The American Media Whores controlled everything except Larry Flynt. All those people getting together peacefully, doing some drugs and figuring out how to stop the murdering in Vietnam. Drugs were the glue back then. Remember too, supposedly John and Bobby used to blow joints in the WH. I honestly think the drug laws in American were put into place in fear for the NeoCons being booted out of power.

3. Also when you know how
marijuana is actually beneficial medicinally for some people and tptb are fighting even that ..tooth and nail.

Cannibus is free and alcohol and cigarettes are not.

I see can how the Asian countries don't want smuggling and dealing and everything else that goes with that..but Death is Dark Ages.

Flower Power!

4. Life in prison would be better
and I'm a little surprised at Australia working against its own nationals, but drug smugglers are not my favorite people. Neither are junkies.

Little pot is ok every decade or so, to remind yourself of the good old days, and all the lives destroyed -- I can think of a dozen personal acquaintances dead or mad from drugs, only three dead drunks . . .

One thing to remember about the Sixties and Seventies -- while the avant-garde led the way experimenting with acid etc, they were soon followed by run-of-the-mill druggies happy to have found a novel form of intoxication. I remember the Beatles talking about how bored they were by the drug scene in San Francisco.

Now I think I'll recall in quiet a few friends lost along the way . . .

Peace.
