Sanders all but declares candidacy for Senate
MONTPELIER, Vt. Vermont Congressman Bernie Sanders has all but declared his candidacy for the U-S Senate seat being vacated by Jim Jeffords.
The sole independent in the U-S House released a statement praising Jeffords after the senator announced he would not seek re-election.

Sanders has previously said he would run for the Senate if Jeffords did not.

6. Democratic Party Had Better Not Run Anyone Against Sanders
Edited on Wed Apr-20-05 06:04 PM by Itsthetruth
If a Democratic Party runs someone against Bernie he will whip their ass along with the Republican candidate. That's what happened when Bernie run for Congress in 2000 and 2004.

So I think it's highly unlikely the Democratic Party will run a candidate and I hope that Bernie runs as an independent.

2000 Election For Congress
Democratic 14,918
Republican 51,977
Independent(Sanders) 216,471

2004 Election For Congress
Democratic 21,684
Republican 74,271
Independent(Sanders) 205,774

8. It would be interesting to see what Vermonter Dean does...
... as head of the DNC. Does he run someone in his home state against Sanders or as you say not run a Democrat! Might be hard for him to "not do", especially for the Senate.

11. Sanders is far more of a liberal
than Dean.

I would think that a good thing...

13. Read
Howard Dean, the former Vermont governor whose presidential campaign soared early and flamed out almost as suddenly, had also been rumored to be contemplating a Senate run. But he told reporters today he would stay in his current post, chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

9. This could well split the liberal vote
Especially if Dean pushes hard for a Democratic candidate. It's possible that while Democrats will pick up Sanders' seat in the house (a wash, IMO), they could lose Jeffords' seat to a Republican who pulls in 40% of the vote.

Somehow I don't think that Karl Rove is the least bit upset by this development.

12. No way
The liberal vote will be behind Sanders. He is very popular in Vermont.

Throughout his career in the House, he has caucused with the Democrats.

I don't think the Dems will run anyone. They'd be smart not to. :)

16. You are wrong about this... This is what republicans are afraid of.
Bernie is well loved by Republicans, Independents, greens and Democrats a like. Last election, he got over 70% votes.

17. This is awesome
they should run Sanders under both the Democratic and Independent line - not sure that can be done in VT - but I've seen it in other states - but there is no doubt in my mind if Bernie Sanders runs he'll win -

22. Bernie Rocks -- I have voted for him in every election.
He's a hardworking, straight-shooting representative.
He's often out in front on tough issues.
I would have really had a hard time between Bernie and Howard.
So, I'll just be signin' up to help Bernie!
