Man attacks Bank of China in Tokyo
Officers arrested a man who threw a bottle with flammable liquid toward a Bank of China branch near Tokyo in apparent retaliation for violent anti-Japanese rallies in China. Nobody was injured, and the attack caused only minor damage, police and reports said.
The 40-year-old man, who claimed to be an ultra-rightwing activist, was arrested by patrolling officers on the spot after he threw the liquid-filled bottle at the bank entrance, a Yokohama prefectural police spokesman said on condition of anonymity.

The bank is in the Yokohama area, which holds Japan's largest Chinatown.

1. Japan-China row to worsen: experts
Growing rivalry between Japan and China is expected to worsen, undermining US strategic interests and challenging its defense commitments in Asia, analysts say.
The US has kept a low profile so far in the latest dispute between the two Asian giants arising from Chinese anger over Japan's perceived lack of contrition for wartime crimes.

But as the two powers compete for resources in their quest for economic growth, flex their military muscle and jostle for political supremacy in Asia, the US cannot help but be dragged into their quarrel, according to some analysts.

2. Perhaps that's the idea
the US only has so many fingers to use, plugging leaks in the dyke.

3. You know what *could* be very scary?
The summer Olympics in Beijing in '08.

I'm involved heavily in the gymnastics community, and when China hosted the world championships in 1999, the crowds were vicious to the Japanese gymnasts. Many of the girls had major errors and were in tears after their performances, as the crowd was swearing at them and jeering racial slurs WHILE they were performing.

In fact, the crowd rattled them so much, they just missed the final berth for qualifying a full, 6-member team to the 2000 Sydney Olympics. The were only able to send 2 girls.

I know this has happened during several other sporting events in China in the past.

The Chinese suffered terribly under the Japanese, and anger is understandable. But they were treating these teenage girls with such venom, it was really hard to watch.

And now, the Japanese men are the regning Olympic Gymnastics Team Champions, heading into the Beijing Olympics...and the Chinese won team gold in the 2000 Olympics! So it's going to be a showdown.

There could be some serious rioting in 2008, and I'm not joking!

4. Pathetic terrorist
Would Japan care to face up its dreadful imperial past? Will Darker tire of calling our attention to propaganda from Taipei Times?

Stay tuned.

("Perceived lack of contrition," indeed. What a shameful article to reprint!)

5. This is an AFP , WASHINGTON story. Sometimes I'm also in a hurry and
miss looking at the source too. Most all reports out of TT are purchases of Reuters, AP, Guardian, NY Times Service, Knight Ridder... You can take a look if you are curious about facts.
