Davis should thank her.

4. Good for her, it's a great thing to do, but her 2% still won't be enough.
Governor Termite-Eater. What a mess. When does the Arnie recall begin?

5. I keep asking this, and I know it's an unpopular question but...
Wouldn't Ah-nold be better than McClintock? I mean, when I look at where the two of them stand on most issues (social) I want to strangle McClintock!!! He's a homophobe, a racist, etc etc etc... I sure as hell don't think Schwarzenegger is a saint, but seems he's a little more progressive than Tom.

Anyway, I hope it's all for naught. I hope Davis makes them eat CROW!!!

7. No
Arnold is worse because he has ties to Rove/Bush/Lay; McClintock, on the other hand, is more conservative, sure, but he has no relations with the evil powers that be. And word is, too, that he even has sour relations with the California republicans. So, essentially, Arnold will be MUCH worse, especially in terms of 2004.

12. McClintock cheerleaders, beware of having your wish come true
Edited on Tue Sep-30-03 08:52 PM by Wwagsthedog
If McClintock's advisor is any indication of his politics then Californians had better hope Alabama's 10 commandments monument doesn't find its way to Sacramento if he wins. At least Arnie may have a voice of reason sharing his bed.

Yes, we all really want Davis or Bustamante to win this sideshow but don't root for the greater of two evils.

on edit, meant to respond to post #5

17. But if McClintock won....
don't you think the ties would quickly be established? They'd woo him, and he'd "play ball."

8. McClintock is highly principled
and that's why he earns a measure of respect, whether one differs with his position or not. There's no doubt on where he stands on the issues.

So I'd say McClintock is better than Arnold. He's got some ideas on what to do about the budget, and he'd never get support in the California legislature for his social positions, so he'd be effectively neutered and unable to do much about those issues. McCllintock also doesn't much care what the Republican party leaders want him to do, either...that strikes me as a positive leadership quality.

I still think Davis will win on the recall, but I think it would be sweet to see McClintock get more votes than Arnie.

16. Why thank Huffington???
According to the LA Weekly, this is her fourth position on the recall...

"...In a column published before her surprise entry into the governor's race, Huffington looked with favor on the recall, despite the right-wing fingerprints on its origins. But after entering the race, she came out against the recall. Later in her campaign, she endorsed the recall. Now she will again be opposed to the recall...."

This is from Arianna Huffington, who changed dramatically from a right wing apologist to a left-wing critic. Huffington wears me out, and I have no use for her.

21. Arianna is the candidate with the courage to really go after Arnold
If Arnold doesn't succeed, it will be largely because Arianna got the information about him out there.

Personally, I wish she would take over leadership of the Democratic Party. We could use more people with the right priorities, such as Arianna has.

13. Thank you Arianna!
Her comments were wonderful, pointed out that she had never been in favor of the recall and now realized the ONLY way to stop Arnold was by stepping out of the race. She will spend the next week touring the state to urge Californians to vote noon the recall.

And when Larry asked her how come Arnie was doing so well in the polls, she got a GREAT shot in on how crappy the CNN poll was! Told him CNN would be very embarrassed when the election happened and their numbers were so off. :) I could kiss her for that!

She is sponsoring a ballot initiative over on her website to clean up the money in elections -- think I will go be, check it out, and send her my greetings.

14. Thanks for the report of what she said
I have a great deal of respect for her. I'm glad she got in the race because she was a needed voice. But it's good for her to get out now and to devote her time to campaigning against the recall.

She's a woman of class. I hope this won't be her last entry into electoral politics. :toast:

19. to hell with the L.A. WEEKling
For many years Arianna has been a loud and clear voice for exposing the creepy right wingers.
(left right and center show, etc.,)
A great effort on her part once again!!

Thanks Arianna.
We need more voices like hers out there.

The L.A.Weakling endorsed Nader in the last election.
They were not friends of the anti war protest effort.

In other words take what you read in the weakling for what it's worth.
And that ain't much--it's FREE

20. If you haven't noticed, DU is free, too.
Kind of like the Huff's tax-free life in her mansion, come to think of it.

Perhaps "free" is a relative value, eh?

22. I'm glad to see Huffington make this move, a woman of class indeed.
As someone said above I would love to see her in the Democratic Leadership. She's intelligent and isn't afraid to speak her mind. That's important for any leader, and I believe she had leadership written all over her despite some of her flaws.

24. If Arnold wins, Arianna can claim some credit for his victory.
Her loud personal attacks on Arnold may bring cheers on DU but it drowned out any attempts by the ACTUAL contenders to make points off Arnold's lack of coherent policy answers to California's problems. She achieved her objective of maximun notoriety for herself ( and maximun buzz for her books and speaking appearances ) but she drowned out any rational attempts to cut Arnold down to size.

Even her attacks on Arnold failed, his support role sharly after she unloaded on him. She walked right into his main strength. By making this ENTIRELY about a celebrity mudfight she eliminated all factors other then celebrity. And an election on this basis is Arnold's dream come true.

From the first day when she tried to horn into his candidacy filing photo op and only accomplished knocking down the press microphones, she has been a bad joke. To put it more simply, she gave him all the cover he could have wished. I don't think she really deserves so much applause for this, except from laughing republicans.
