MOSCOW (Reuters) - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has put Russia on guard that the United States will not ignore any retreat by Moscow from democratic reforms.


During a visit that sent a chill through relations Rice declared that Putin had too much power and she spoke out over the absence of independent television channels.


"Rice showed her teeth during talks in Moscow," read a caption in a Russian daily newspaper Thursday, beneath a photograph of a beaming Rice meeting President Vladimir Putin.

Rice was ostensibly preparing the ground for a visit to Moscow on May 9 by Bush to attend celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of World War II victory by Soviet forces

Now as far as CondaLoser showing her "teeth"; this is not news. She's done this on a number of occasions. Recall Bush's visit to Moscow, where he publicly humiliated Putin. He outrageously said that "Putin is not focusing on Democracy", right in front of him, with a sweeping gesture of his arm, and a stupid look on his face.

Putin looked VERY unhappy. So none of this is new.

Currently, the US is looking for boundaries, some limits as to what Russia is willing to endure, and where their limits lie. The US is working behind the scenes on a lot of stuff, and they want to gauge Russia's reactions. Russia may not react the way they're expecting, though. I would expect that Putin will "whisper and carry a VERY big stick".

Just call it a fact-finding mission.
