GOP, Dems Diverge on Social Security Bill

By GLEN JOHNSON
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Hope of finding a bipartisan solution to Social Security's financial problems has diminished, with Senate Republicans planning to write a bill by themselves and Democrats promoting a rally against the private investment accounts that are the centerpiece of President Bush's plan.

After a hearing next Tuesday, Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley plans to begin caucusing with other Republicans on the Senate Finance Committee he chairs.

"...That's where we start working now, aiming to come up with a Republican bill, and hopefully in the process, Democrats see the light and come to the table and tell us what they don't like about our bill," he said in an interview Friday.

Grassley noted that "at least publicly there hasn't been a single Democrat that hasn't said they won't sit down and negotiate until private accounts are off the table."

Could Grassley include a few more negatives in that last sentence.

2. If the Repugs insist on running the game
why bother playing along with this farce? All it does is give them a fig leaf of legitimacy. The Democrats are wise to stay far, far away.

5. Absolutely correct!
Do not give them any way to call their scheme "bipartisan". Call it what it is--a right wing scam.

I hope all Democrats are listening.

10. And what is so funny is I don't think they saw this coming.
Its like their little scheme backfired. I think they did more to stregnthen and unify the Democratic party by this power grab than they ever could have by making concessions and tossing the Dems a bone every now and then.

Goons have a limited imagination and perspective when it comes to consequences.

3. What a tool of a headline. The two parties diverge?
Previously skipping along happily together, the two parties now diverge.

What bunk.

4. We have those bastards right where we want them.
They are so screwed.

They should have just given up, and pretend like they never even mentioned Social Security.

It would be easier than what they are about to go through.

They are going over Shit Falls in a barrel.

There have already been TOOO many Dem's playing footsies with them already (bankruptcy bill, anwar, etc). For one, I can see Leiberman selling out. Dare I say it, I wish this were a time we were more like the GOP and stick togather to party. They WANT that bipartisan fig leaf, cause Joe 6 pack can certainly see everything now.
