Bolton Finds U.N. Nomination in Jeopardy
Bolton Finds U.N. Nomination in Jeopardy

By ANNE GEARAN
The Associated Press
Saturday, April 23, 2005; 1:43 PM

WASHINGTON - Withdraw or be pushed out by the White House. Survive the test of his professional life. Suffer a rejection by the Senate. That's about what it comes down to for John R. Bolton, President Bush's besieged nominee to be U.N. ambassador.

Bolton could weather the indignity of further investigation into his personal and professional behavior and win confirmation by the Senate next month. He also could find his nomination scuttled. Or he could pull the plug before a scheduled May 12 vote by a Senate committee.

Only a week ago, Bolton seemed assured of moving on to New York to be the ambassador who works toward Bush's wishes for major changes at the United Nations. His new assignment, however, was thrown into jeopardy last week when moderate Republican senators said new allegations about Bolton gave them cause to reconsider whether he was the right person for the job.

"This nomination is not doomed, but it's on life support and the plug may well be pulled any day," said Allan J. Lichtman, a political history professor at American University.

1. Might be a win-win either way.
Say he does survive and gets installed. What's the old saying? "A leopard doesn't change his spots." His true nature will be revealed and displayed because EVERYONE is watching. He'd be the poster child for Dem "I Told You So." Great campaign issue.

On the other hand, he gets withdrawn, and we all win.

3. His true nature has already been revealed...
...and yet there are still officials seriously touting his nomination, and and an army of the brainwashed still angry at any show of opposition. Nothing he would actually do in office would open any more American eyes, though the harm could be global.

10. He will have no authority if he gets approved
Everyone in the U.N. will laugh at him and bait him until he explodes. They can taste his blood in the water. They'll eat him alive.

2. Good. Let the digging begin.
And they will. Remember Bernard Kerik? The dirt on that guy just kept escalating and escalating until it was unbelievable. Talk about dirty laundry.

...I hope they dig so deep, the guy will be radioactive by the time thry're through.

It would be fitting, somehow.

5. Fueling the fire to scuttle the bastard
I sent this letter re: Bolton to the following Dems on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee:

Senator Joseph R. Biden
Senator Barbara Boxer
Senator Christopher J. Dodd
Senator Russell D. Feingold
Senator John Forbes Kerry
Senator Bill Nelson
Senator Barack H. Obama
Senator Paul S. Sarbanes
Senator George V. Voinovich (Republican - Ohio) was also included for good measure

Dear Senator:

On January 26, 1998, John Bolton signed a letter to President Clinton issued by the Project for a New American Century (PNAC) urging an attack on Iraq to remove Saddam Hussein from power. Other signators to the PNAC letter include Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, Elliott Abrams, Richard Perle, Richard Armitage, and Zalmay Khalilzad, who were all elevated into the Bush Administration hierarchy immediately after the 2000 Election.

Mr. Bolton has already battled allegations of exaggerating intelligence on Cuba's alleged biological weapons program but his role in helping to create the "faulty intelligence" leading to the Iraq war should also be closely scrutinized considering his earlier participation in promoting the PNAC's agenda towards the Middle East.

I encourage you to read "PNAC 101" for a broader overview to their inner workings and a clearer understanding of the danger associated with appointing Mr. Bolton as Ambassador to the U.N.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

9. Just regarding John Bolton:
He is ideologically unsuited for the U.N. post.

He appears to need anger management classes, as Senator Boxer suggested.

The White House should pressure him to withdraw his name and instead appoint David Kay, former weapons inspector.

They won't. Kay's too independent.

But he would be a matrue choice for that position.
