Jeb Bush Given 'Pause' When at Odds with Church

By Phil Stewart
ROME (Reuters) - Whether it is the war in Iraq or the death penalty, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush says he is given "pause" when the policies he and his brother support run against the views of the Roman Catholic Church.

Bush, who converted to Catholicism to share the faith of his Mexican-born wife Columba, will lead the U.S. delegation to the inauguration of Pope Benedict on Sunday on behalf of President Bush.

"I get uneasy when the Vatican writes me letters when a death penalty case is about ready to take place in Florida. I'll be honest with you, that gives me pause. It makes me pray harder," Bush told reporters in Rome on Saturday.

....

President Bush oversaw the most executions of any U.S. governor in modern history when he was governor of Texas from 1995 to 2000. Texas executed 152 people.

.....

Like his brother did earlier this month, Gov. Bush spoke about the papacy's important role in cultivating the "culture of life" and cited the case of Terri Schiavo.

14. Isn't ALL human life equally sacred according to the Church?
If you believe abortion is the taking of a life, then you also think must think it's also the same when a soldier dies in a war, or a convict is put to death. What?! Is Jeb a cafeteria Catholic???

I believe the doctrinal position of the RCC is that captial punishment is as wrong as abortion.

30. Jeb gives the word "pray" a bad name.
Edited on Sun Apr-24-05 11:38 AM by Seabiscuit
The word "pray" as I learned it is completely at odds with everything Jeb and his evil sibling stand for.

4. And praying harder absolves him? No, that's really not how it works.
And... I would ask... why doesn't this Pope cut off Jeb's communion rights since he supports the death penalty? How is that any different than Kerry and the right to choose?

I guess the culture of life only breeds in the petri dish?

sheesh.

10. The Family That Preys Together
http://www.williambowles.info/bush/preys.htm

From Issue No. 41, Covert Action Quarterly , Summer, 1992
by Jack Colhoun

excerpt:

JEB LINKED TO SMUGGLERS AND THIEVES

Jeb Bush has also been linked to Leonel Martinez, a Miami-based right-wing Cuban-American drug trafficker. Martinez, who was linked to Contra dissident Eden Pastora, was involved in efforts to smuggle more than 3,000 pounds of cocaine into Miami in 1985-86. He was arrested in 1989 and later convicted for bringing 300 kilos of cocaine into the U.S. He also reportedly arranged for the delivery of two helicopters, arms, ammunition, and clothing to Pasto- ra's Costa Rica-based Contras.

Federal prosecutors in Miami have a photograph of Jeb and Martinez shaking hands but won't release the photo to the public. Whether Jeb was aware of Martinez's drug trafficking activities is not known, but it is known that Leonel and his wife Margarita made a $2,200 contribution to the Dade County Republican Party four months after Jeb became the chair of the local GOP.

It is also known that Martinez wrote $5,000 checks to then Vice President Bush's Fund for America's Future in both December 1985 and July 1986 and made a $2,000 contribution to the Bush for President campaign in October 1987.

Martinez's construction company gave $6,000 in October 1986 to Bob Martinez (no relation), the GOP candidate for governor in Florida; he was governor from 1987 to 1991. At that time, Vice President Bush was serving as head of the South Florida Drug Task Force and later as chair of the National Narcotics Interdiction System, both set up to stem the flow of drugs into the U.S. While Bush was drug czar, the volume of cocaine smuggled into the U.S. tripled.

...and so very much more...

Dirty Money
By Jefferson Morley

A reputation for violence became part of the Leonel Martinez mystique. In
1968 and again in 1980, he was arrested for aggravated assault. He has been
charged with a 1978 double murder, and has also been implicated in the 1984
and 1987 killings of men who worked for him. Metro police investigating the
1978 case believe Martinez ordered the victims killed after they discovered
his cocaine operation and tried to extort money from him. One member of
Martinez's organization later told police why he wouldn't testify against
Martinez: he had heard that the wife of a previous informant had found her
husband's severed arm in her refrigerator.
Martinez was not at all shy about his success. When he was arrested for
carrying a concealed weapon in 1981, he told his probation officer he was
worth eight million dollars. Also in 1981, he began spending $100,000 per
month to build a new waterfront house at 7020 Mira Flores Avenue in
Cocoplum, a 13,000-square-foot, nine-bedroom, self-designed pleasure palace
complete with a movie theater and a basement disco that could hold 100
people. His wife Margarita had her own sewing room, and out back was a
swimming pool as well as a dock for his $1.3 million yacht. There was also a
secret hideaway to which Martinez could escape and live for days if police
ever came in search of him. He later said he had built the $2.2 million
house so his kids would not have to seek entertainment away from home.
In December of 1983, Leonel Martinez moved into his dream house. He had come
a long way from shining shoes in Campo Florido, Cuba.

22. WHAT WAS JOHN ELLIS BUSH DOING IN ROME IN A CONFERENCE MEANT FOR
THE PRESS?

and to see jeb stand in front of a microphone like a SAINTED VIRTUOUS MAN is sickening enough so the mute and change channel button went into immediate action the minute his two faced hypocritical face showed up on my television screen.

Reaching for the mute/change channel button is an automatic reaction with me the minute any of these bushes show their faces on television, from poppy, to junior, to mommy, to john ellis, to george p., to ... any of them...i can't stand any of them.

29. At what point can he still call himself Catholic?
I was raised Catholic but I haven't gone to church in years. Since I disagree with so much that the church teaches why consider myself a follower of a religion when it's beliefs are so different from mine.
