UN investigator who exposed US army abuse forced out of his job
http://news.independent.co.uk/world/politics/story.jsp?story=632719

The UN's top human rights investigator in Afghanistan has been forced out under American pressure just days after he presented a report criticising the US military for detaining suspects without trial and holding them in secret prisons.
. . .
Mr Bassiouni's report had highlighted America's policy of detaining prisoners without trial and lambasted coalition officials for barring independent human rights monitors from its bases.

Prisoners captured in Afghanistan and elsewhere in the region are held at US bases, often before being shipped to Guantanamo Bay. Human Rights Watch called on Saturday for a US special prosecutor to investigate the Defence Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, and Charles Tenet, the former-CIA director, for torture and abuse of detainees in jails around the world, including Abu Ghraib in Iraq. They should be held responsible under the doctrine of "command responsibility," it said.
. . .
The UN eliminated Mr Bassiouni's job last week after Washington had pressed for his mandate to be changed so that it would no longer cover the US military.

The UN's top human rights investigator in Afghanistan has been forced out under American pressure just days after he presented a report criticising the US military for detaining suspects without trial and holding them in secret prisons.

Cherif Bassiouni had needled the US military since his appointment a year ago, repeatedly trying, without success, to interview alleged Taliban and al-Qa'ida prisoners at the two biggest US bases in Afghanistan, Kandahar and Bagram.

Mr Bassiouni's report had highlighted America's policy of detaining prisoners without trial and lambasted coalition officials for barring independent human rights monitors from its bases.

14. It's hard to tell what the priority is with the Admin
other than absolute power.

If it were all for corporate profits, you would think they would try to make economic sense some of the time. But they've completely fucked things up. Even Greenspan (who is partly responsible) is sputtering about the Republican deficits.

19. The stakes are way too high to let a guy like this muck things up.
The success of the entire enterprise relies on a united team effort to "stay on message". Whistleblower guys are simply steam rolled flat and the whole big motherfucker just rolls along full speed.

20. Bush Administration Wants to Continue its Exactions Without Witnesses
Afghanistan - Humans right

The Bush administration wants to continue its exactions without witnesses

Bassirat.net
25 Avril 2005

Under the pressure of the American administration, the United Nations put an end to the mandate of Cherif Bassiouni, professor of right in Chicago and independent expert dispatched in Afghanistan to evaluate there the situation of the humans right in the name of UNO.

In his last report submitted to the Commission of the humans right of the United Nations, Cherif Bassiouni denounced " illegal tortures, arrests and maltreatment " perpetrated by the coalition international antiterrorist placed under the aegis of Washington, by the Afghan forces (police force, army and services of information) and the private companies of safety " the forces of the coalition must stop being placed at the top of the law ", declared Mr. Bassiouni. " When they are devoted " to such practices, " the forces of the coalition sap the realization of the national project " and " create one unfavourable political climate which is likely to ruin the process of peace ", it estimated.

Cherif Bassiouni, which was based on work of the Commission independent of the humans right, of ONG and on testimonys of victims, denounced the methods employed by the soldiers of the coalition to question the prisoners " It acts in particular (...) of sexual maltreatment, of beating up, acts of tortures and of use of the force having involved death ", it affirmed " forced Destitution, blindness by means of a hood, sensory deprivation, deprivation of sleep and of food, obligation to remain squatted or upright in painful postures for prolonged periods " is also practices which were brought back.
