Missing Georgia toddlers found dead

Monday, April 25, 2005 Posted: 4:35 PM EDT (2035 GMT)

WARRENTON, Georgia (CNN) -- The bodies of two toddlers reported missing over the weekend were found Monday in a pond near their rural Georgia home, state investigators said.

"It appears that our worst fears have been realized," said John Bankhead, spokesman for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Bankhead said the bodies were found about 12:15 p.m. in a sanitation pond, and that they were positively identified in a photograph by their father. The spokesman said an autopsy will be performed Tuesday and that the investigation was ongoing.

The search for 3-year-old Jonah Payne and his 2-year-old sister, Nicole, had resumed Monday morning, said Warren County sheriff's officials, who suspended the search Sunday night because of fatigue.

1. What happened?
Did they wander to the pond? Did the mother have something to do with this? This is just terrible.

2. From the story
Warrenton Police Chief Jim McClain said Lottie Kain called 911 shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday and reported that the toddlers had disappeared from their home in Warrenton, about 40 miles west of Augusta, when she went to the bathroom for a few minutes.

Search teams -- both law enforcement and volunteer -- worked all night Saturday and most of Sunday before fatigue set in, and officials called a time out.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation officials told The Augusta Chronicle that they have not seen evidence to indicate anyone abducted the children. But Payne, Kain's fiance, told the paper he believed someone took them.

Sounds like another case of the parents killing the kids and trying to blame it on an intruder.

of something or someone - they are doing polygraphs, but they don't say of who:
---snip---
He said that authorities had interviewed several people and administered more than one polygraph examination.

"I can't talk specifically about polygraph examinations," he said. "I will say generally that a polygraph is a valuable tool in these type of investigations."

16. Liberals killed those children
remember? That's what Newt said. I'll never forgive him for that statement. He blamed the deaths of Susan Smith's boys on liberals. How completely odious that man is. Nevermind that Smith's stepfather, a Republican committeeman, had been molesting her since middle-school.

5. What was the weather like ?
Any reason to think the kids may have wandered to the pond to play, not knowing any better ?

3 year olds can be pretty crafty, and 2 year olds have a tendency to follow 3 year old siblings just about everywhere.

15. You are so right -
- about them being crafty. One morning, many years ago, as I was getting ready for work, I looked out the bathroom window only to see my 3 year old son playing with the wood chipper! (It was not running but it still frightened the stuffings out of me) He had been in the living room with his sister and had just unlocked the door and the bolt and let himself outside while I was brushing my hair. I didn't think he was capable of doing that or reaching that high. Obviously, I was really wrong.

That evening we had another lock installed very, very high on the door.

21. One of my nephews pulled a stunt like that when he was 3
My sister-in-law went in the kitchen to get the kids breakfasts ready and when she came out the front door was open. She looked out and saw my nephew heading down the street in his (foot powered) car. The dog was with him, but the dog would stop ever few feet and look back toward the house, like he knew this was not right. My brother also installed a lock high up on the door. A few days later my sister-in-law heard a thump-thump on the inside stairs leading to the door. By the time she got there, she found the same kid on a chair trying to reach the lock with a broom.

17. Actually, I have to revise the position on the BF due to the nature of the
deaths of the children.

I have to believe now that the mother is responsible; female murderers generally choose a passive form of death, such as poisoning, drowning and so on.

Men are the violent offenders by and large.

The chances of this being a purely accidental death of such young babies just so incredibily unlikely.

13. Have you ever seen that video of the lions?
The male picks out a female he wants to mate with, but she has young cubs. He methodically goes to each one and picks it up and kills it. The cubs have no idea what is coming. They don't even try to get away.

It is horrifying.

14. It is horrifying, but it's nature -
the survival of the strongest - it happens more when there is a shortage of food and water too.

19. Actually, when the cubs are killed off, it immediately brings
the female into estrus, so the new male can mate with her and produce his own offspring. As long as she is rearing another male's cubs, she will be unreceptive to mate with him.
