Lampson files papers to challenge DeLay
Lampson files papers to challenge DeLay

The Associated Press 04/27/2005

HOUSTON (AP) - Former Democratic Congressman Nick Lampson made his challenge of U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay official, filing documents with the Federal Election Commission.

The filing Tuesday allows Lampson, a Beaumont Democrat, to start raising money for his campaign. Lampson lost his 2004 re-election bid after GOP-led congressional redistricting absorbed some of his district into DeLay's newly formed one.

Lampson announced Friday he would seek the Democratic nomination and said he plans to move into the district to make the bid....>

1. Great news!
Scumbags like DeLay should be challenged at the polls even if they are on safe GOP districts. Make this asshole work for his reelection!

2. Question: What are his chances against DeLay, an incumbent?

3. not overwhelming
Lampson wants to raise 4 million, IF the people want Delay out, it can be done. BTW, he was my former congressman before Delay redistricted. Lampson is a pro-choice catholic, good on most liberal issues and pro-union. He was replaced with a far-right goofball repug
named Ted Poe who looks a lot like Zell miller, crazy eyes and all.

4. I thought DeLay was not ranking well in the polls in his own district.
Is that an incorrect recollection, or wasn't there something to that effect in the news recently?

6. your recollection is correct...
I heard a piece on NPR to that effect.

Since the DeLay circus on Shiavo case, even MSM is reporting his dropping popularity.

7. I Miss Nick
I have no representation in congress at all now with Nick gone.I bet Poe kisses Delay's butt because he put him in office.

5. strike while the iron is hot...
this is a good time for Nick to gain name recognition while DeLay is on voter's minds.

NPR interviewed some solid repubs in DeLay's district last week, some responded with "wait & see" others had "serious doubts about him".

If the DeLay coup happens (by democratic means in the 2006 election) it will be sweet revenge for what they did to Tom (Daschle) because he refused to support the war resolution.

That vote alone cost Tom his political career, makes you wanna be right (morally) doesn't it ?

13. Nobody's better off with more incompetent, weak, or corrupt politicians
I'm not pointing the finger at Daschle specifically, but there are plenty of corrupt fools on both sides of the aisle.

11. 2 things I vividly remember about Daschle...

when the "auth to go to war with iraq" bill was introduced, he steadfastly opposed it, serving as a dem pillar to others in senate who wished to oppose it.

Gebhardt agonizingly supported it, but you could see the pain in his face (he was a candidate for prez) as the president dragged him into a rose garden press conf. showing off dem support for his plan to go to war.

Seeing Tom's clear opposition to war they left him alone.

The 2nd thing was his firm stand on confirming a hispanic justice/judge who refused to answer all the questions, in writing, given to him by the senate. It may have been Gonzalez, I can't recall.

These two prominent stands earned him a lot of anti-Daschle campaigning by the prez.

As someone else eloquently put it on your opinion poll thread, perhaps Daschle didn't need to be a senate minority leader, but we certainly lost a very good senator.

Looking back, his positions are proving to be correct & wiser each day.

Thank you for your post & poll.

It's official: Lampson will challenge DeLay
4-term House member was hurt by redistricting

Democratic former U.S. Rep. Nick Lampson filed papers with the Federal Election Commission Tuesday to challenge House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Sugar Land, in next year's election.

He has scheduled a Washington fund-raiser Thursday, turning an unrelated trip into a campaign kickoff.

"It truly got ahead of me," said Lampson, of Beaumont. "I wasn't ready for it to break in the way it broke. But I certainly feel like I'm the one that is far and away prepared to move forward."

Sugar Land lawyer Richard Morrison, a Democrat who lost to DeLay in November, said Monday he wouldn't try for a rematch against DeLay in the 22nd Congressional District.

Houston City Councilman Gordon Quan has said he is considering the race and is forming an exploratory committee.

18. I'm looking forward to a televised debate
I really doubt that anyone could dislodge Rep. Delay from his roost, but, just maybe, the nutty voters of Sugarland may be sick of his corruption by now.

20. Just in time: Fort Bend County will start voting electronically!
As most of you have heard, we here in Fort Bend County were presented with a ceremonial check from the State of Texas for about two million dollars to purchase electronic voting machine. Let me see if I got this straight: we were “given” two million dollars of our own money to buy something we don't need.

We've had a perfectly good voting system for the past twenty five years that works just fine and involves a pencil and piece of paper. But, we are being forced to join the Atomic Age and get something that does not involve anything as painfully simple as a pencil. Anybody who has ever lost a quarter in a Coke machine should be terribly afraid of what we’re probably gonna be forced to vote with.

The committee has recommended that we have electronic voting without a paper trail. That's faith-based voting, my friends.
