Lugar Predicts Bolton's Approval
White House Depicts Nomination Battle as Fight Over U.N.'s Future

By Dafna Linzer
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, April 28, 2005; Page A02

The Republican chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee predicted yesterday that John R. Bolton would be approved as the next ambassador to the United Nations, even as Senate Democrats prepared new questions for the controversial nominee.

Committee sources said they are exploring new complaints and accusations against Bolton. His nomination was stalled last week to review allegations that he bullied intelligence analysts, exaggerated foreign threats and sought to remove officials who disagreed with him.

-snip-
"A vote for John Bolton is a vote for reform at the United Nations," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said. "A vote against him is a vote for the status quo at the United Nations."

President Bush and Senate Republicans indicated they are considering a showdown vote on the Senate floor even if the foreign relations panel does not endorse Bolton.

4. I think its best if Bolton does get confirmed.
Democrats are going to start to look like obstructionists, and in fact I just read that thats what Bush is going to say Thurs night. And that will eventually start to work and cause the polls to change. You can't filibuster everything for four years; you have to pick fights strategically.

I think it would be best if Bolton went through, there was a compromise on the appellate judges, and even Bush was sort of allowed to have who he wants to replace Rehnquist (since its essentially a conservative for a conservative). I'd save the filibuster and "closing the senate" for his second Supreme Court pick; thats the one thats of monumental importance and will change the balance of the court.

Up until then I... wouldn't just give in on stuff, but I wouldn't overplay my hand either. Right now Democrats are in a good position but that could change.

6. I think Bolten is bad enough,
that it won't hurt the polls. Hard to say for sure, but we'll see.
Colin Powell not wanting him in was pretty big.

7. The Dems are on a roll with this! The more that comes out
about Bolton, the worse he looks. And BTW, he's not actually qualified.

8. Oh no! Not obstructionists!
Oh dear God in heaven, let's not have a bunch of smug, spoiled, overrich Senators call the Democrats "obstructionists"!

My, my, I seem to have the vap-ahs. {Fans self}

12. hello? "best" that an unqualified, temperamentally explosive,
abrasive, UNdiplomatic a-hole be our representative to the UN? Kudos to the Democrats for resisting this! for years they spinelessly caved in to every one of Bush's evil plans--and look where it got us! I think they have woken up to the fact that they are the REPRESENTATIVES OF THE PEOPLE, not Bush's yes-men.

since Bush's credibility is about zero these days, who gives a #%*& if he calls the Democrats "obstructionists"? the only people this has an effect on are already convinced Bush = God.

19. No, you're quite wrong.
Bolton is a dangerous creep & could cause real problems with the UN. The Democrats haven't exactly been good at blocking previous horrid appointments. We need this victory.

I don't believe filibuster has been mentioned in this case. Continuing questions & presentation of evidence might actually work.

Where have you seen Democrats being called obstructionists? Outside of right wing sources, that is?

20. It does not matter what the Repugs say.
Dems NEED to be obstructionists. There is no baiss for trust with the Chimp administration. Repugs are out for all the marbles and, so far, have never acted in good faith. I'd sooner collaborate with the Mafia or the Third Riech.

24. Who CARES if they are painted as obstructionists? Don't you get it?
They will be painted as obstructionists no matter how many times they let them get away with whatever the GOP wants. Why do you work FOR the GOP? Why do you play the appeaser?

9. Excellent. The further out on this limb the GOP goes, the happier I get
It was really frustrating when the pukes were playing the false "moderate" card for all those years, while looting the treasury under America's collective nose. But now that they're openly pushing their extremism without even making a serious effort to come up with new euphemisms, I'm starting to enjoy it. It's the ultimate reality show.

And the best part is, it won't last for long. The libertarians and corporate fatcats are going to break away from the neo-cons and dominionists big time pretty soon. The republican party is going to genuflect its way into obsolescence before our very eyes.

11. Why exactly does the UN need reform?
I thought he was being nominated to be our ambassador, not the UN reformer?

Who the fuck are these people!!!!!!!

13. Bolton reformed the Iraqi WMD question
It's almost obvious Bolton is the man responsible for the false WMD information. And now he is being rewarded with the UN position.

18. In the Chimp lexicon, " reform" means " destroy"
It makes more sense if you look at it that way. The UN needs to be destroyed.

16. Aw hell no..
If we keep up the volume on the "revelations" and the definition of "diplomacy"

And remind people that B*SH kept saying that we have to get the rest of the world "on board" with us.

he will sink himself..
(PLUS.. everyone that shilled for him will look weaker into the bargain)...

Scotty, do you ever wake up in the morning, look in the mirror and say to yourself, "I hate my job"?

No? Well, then, you're an idiot.

23. I just don't get what right we have to reform the UN....
The ugly American rears its ugly head yet again.
Every time I hear these people, I mean a direct quote from the mouthpiece of the President of the United States, I just become speechless. What business of ours is to reform the UN? Wouldn't that be a group effort based on... hey.... the rest of the world? the whole world?

They really do think we run the world, huh?

Is it just some of us who think all this hubris and disregard for the sovereignty and point of view of other nations (including "allies") is going to really, truly lead to the end of the very life and power to which they so ridiculously and callously cling?

We are sooooo going down. I don't "hope" but somewhere in my heart, I "know" the rest of the world is fed up and about to boycott the shit out of us. It won't be terrorism that ruins this country. It will be financial collapse based on the rest of the world putting the bully in its place.

I don't think "they" need us to reform them all or anything else.

The gall.
I just... I'm sitting here shaking my head.
