SF Radio Station to Begin Airing Podcasts
http://www.poynter.org/column.asp?id=31&aid=81701

On May 16, Infinity Broadcasting's KYCY-AM in San Francisco will drop its talk-radio format and switch to broadcasting its listeners' own podcasts. It'll also stream those podcasts from the domain KYOURADIO.com Open Source Radio.

Beginning today, listeners will be able to upload their podcasts of varying lengths for free at KYOURADIO.com, where podcasts will be chosen by the broadcaster. Infinity Broadcasting says that the pod programming will be determined by listener interests and feedback, and evaluated on a daily basis.

"There is a profound shift under way in the way we use technology that allows everyone to have a voice. KYOURADIO harnesses that power by serving our listeners with content developed by them for them and offering a platform to share it with the rest of the world," said Infinity Broadcasting chairman and CEO Joel Hollander in a press release.

2. I really like podcasts.

The shows are pretty low budget, and it shows sometimes. But it's pretty cool that you can engage the podcasters in discussion and they play & talk about the stuff you want to talk about.

Hopefully, they'll become more professional as they start making enough money so they can quit their day jobs.

3. Radio on the cheap?
Yes, podcasting is wonderful, but I can't help but think that KYCY/KYOU is turning to this as a way to supply programming to their station at a total cost of $0. (Unless, of course, I've missed something about compensation.)

Of course, with so many podcasters out there, they will have no trouble at all finding people willing to put their shows on the air for free.

That said, if you're a budding DU podcaster in the Bay Area, I'd hop on this opportunity now, right away, so that voices from our side will be represented. Otherwise, I suspect we might end up with 23 hours a day of "The Vegan Stoner Grateful Dead/Phish Hour." (No offense intended toward vegans, stoners, the Grateful Dead, and/or Phish!)
