Anti-Japan protests `an evil plot'
A leading state-run Chinese newspaper said in a staff editorial this week that the wave of popular protests against Japan were part of an "evil plot" with "ulterior motives," suggesting that at least some in the Chinese leadership now wish to portray the demonstrations as a conspiracy to undermine the Communist Party.

The editorial, published in The Liberation Daily of Shanghai on Monday, used the most strident language to date in an escalating campaign against the anti-Japan protests, which officials had previously done relatively little to stop -- and some say had even encouraged -- for three weeks until the present.

"The preponderance of facts prove that the recent illegal marches were not a patriotic movement, but rather amounted to illegal behavior," the editorial said. "They were not a spontaneous movement of the masses, but rather had a backstage plot."

1. I saw an article in the NYTimes this week.
It was about how the Chinese have been using IM and cell phone text messaging to relay info about rallies. The government wasn't too pleased and was planning on shutting these services down.
They seem afraid that another 1989 will occur.
The whole thing makes me curious as to what is under the surface of Chinese society. On the outside, it seems to be doing very well from a government point of view. How do the common folks/the workers feel?
Do you have any links or inside information?

2. Inside information isn't of much value though
Because they can't bounce around information horizontally with any great freedom, people only see what's around them, not the big picture, perhaps even more so because they live there.

Besides, I'd thought the government itself had been using the text messaging. But I could be totally wrong on that easily.

But sure, it's a boiling society. SOME parts are doing very well. A lot of the rest isn't and it's not easy to keep under control.. and the common folk in the cities, that's way different than the common folk not in the cities.

3. City vs. rural.
Very true in any society. Look at Russia prior to the revolution or America during the Depression.
You have some good points. I'm curious if the NYTimes picked up on the idea that the government using text messaging. You've made me want to look into that a bit more.

4. Anyone who has lived in China and they're not a Media Whore or
looking to score trips like Delays gets... would tell you
1. Chinese don't care much about anything but money and making a good life for themselves and their family.
2. The Chinese citizen would NEVER go off and protest like this on their own. This was completely organized by the Communist 'self appointed' leaders.
