Sen. Clinton Backs Proposed Ticonderoga Tire Burn
TICONDEROGA, N.Y. -- International Paper has added Sen. Hillary Clinton's support to its controversial quest for an energy solution at its plant in Ticonderoga on the shore of Lake Champlain.

Clinton issued a statement saying she knows some are worried about the potential air quality impact of burning shredded tires at the mill. She said she has been assured that the test burn would be conducted within all of the mill's current permit limitations.

The letter is addressed to Denise Sheehan, acting commissioner of New York's Department of Environmental Conservation.

The proposed test burn has upset Vermont residents who live across Lake Champlain and downwind of the plant.

3. Beats burning coal
FWIW, there used to be a tire incinerator near Tracy California that ran for many years and didn't expel any visible pollutants. They placed partical filters on the stacks that prevented the plant from adding to our smog problem. It was actually a pretty good facility until lightning struck one of the tire piles and a resulting tire fire sent dozens of neighbors to the hospital. The fallout from the lawsuits caused it to shut down.

4. A controlled burn is much better than
an uncontrolled one. If a pile of tires catches on fire, you can't put it out, you have to let it burn out.

If it passes all the scrubbing tests, I'd say burn it........but, I would like some energy conversion from all that heat.

5. I thought tires could be...
shredded and used for pavement. Seems silly to poison the air, just to get rid of them.

7. Tires are made from oil
When you burn a tire as a fuel, you don't burn its equivalent amount of oil or coal. The burning facility will have EPA oversight, and will scrub its emissions.

If you don't burn tires, you end up with a big pile of them. Three billion and counting, currently. The unburned piles have a way of catching fire, sooner or later, and then you have a real problem. Meanwhile, discarded tires make nearly ideal mosquito incubators.

Peace.

I said shred them, I read a few years back that they were shredding them for use as road construction. Use these tires for that.

9. I'd rather trust Sen. Clinton
to oversee the project than a Republican. If we're going to deal with energy shortages, we're going to have to look to these kinds of solutions, as long as they don't harm the environment.

6. Fascinating.....
that Hillary, a dem enviornmentalist, is FOR this silly proposal and Jim Douglas, a Bush repub, is AGAINST this polluting proposal. The prevailing winds are out of the west so, if Hillary thinks this is such a good idea, why not try it in Buffalo or Syracuse??
