Liberals and Conservatives tied in latest poll (Canada)
A new poll shows that if an election was held today, the Liberals and the Conservatives would be neck-and-neck in the race for national support. The numbers show a boost for the Liberals in the past week, indicating a recovery from bombshell news from the sponsorship inquiry.

In the total sample of the poll, conducted for CTV and The Globe and Mail by The Strategic Counsel, Liberals are polling at 30 per cent and the Conservatives trail close behind at 28 per cent. That two per cent gap is within the poll's margin of error, meaning the parties are statistically tied.

The NDP are at 18 per cent in this new poll, and the Green Party is at 10 per cent.

Canadians seemed to take kindly to Martin's suggestion. According to the poll, 61 per cent felt Martin's offer to call an election within 30 days of receiving the sponsorship inquiry report was reasonable. Another 33 per cent felt the offer was unreasonable and six per cent said they did not know.

(This poll should give the faux Cons pause in bringing down the government, Canadians are adamant, they do NOT want a snap election and Harper is not able to sell his message.)

1. This is good news...
I definitely feared the Harper NeoCon takeover. I hope the Liberals can get a low majority or a coalition with the NDP.

3. It looks like it isn't in just one poll, either and the bloc
isn't as strong now as was being reported according to this CBC report:

Polls show Tories have lost their lead
Last Updated Fri, 29 Apr 2005 11:26:29 EDT

OTTAWA - Two new polls show the federal Conservative party has lost its lead in public opinion across Canada in the past week.

And a third poll, taken just in Quebec, indicates support for separatism may not be as high as another survey showed earlier this week.

The two national polls, by GPC Research and Strategic Counsel, each have a margin of error that puts the Liberals and Conservatives in a statistical tie.

A third poll, released this week by the CROP polling firm, found only 47 per cent of Quebecers favoured sovereignty, compared with the 54 per cent support a Léger Marketing poll reported on Wednesday.

2. This is definitely what I expected.
Martin's body language during the speech and the manner of presentation as well as the content were about the best he'd ever pulled off, in spite of the difficulty of the situation.

4. Good, I thought the media and Harper were overstretching.
I still think Harper will push the button for an election if he gets a chance - his only hope is to focus on Gomery inquiry corruption allegations (unproven of course) to the exclusion of his actual policies. It is amusing that favoring corporate tax cuts will be main positive campaign issue, especially now that Martin is pushing the spending money on day care angle. "Corporate profits before kids" will make an interesting campaign slogan for the Tories.

And hopefully--the pending legislation like same-sex marriage, decrim, etc will get passed as well...

The Torys never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity! yuk yuk...bunch of idiots
