"Choose Life" plates in Oregon?

"Choose Life" plates in Oregon?

By NIKI SULLIVAN

The Associated Press

SALEM, Ore. — Square dancers, Beavers' fans and ham-radio operators can cruise around with special-issue license plates to declare their affiliations in Oregon.

Now an Oregon group thinks abortion foes should be able to get "Choose Life" plates from the state.

The plates would be more expensive than regular Oregon plates, and the extra money would go toward nonprofit groups that provide pregnancy and adoption support — but not abortion — for expectant mothers.

<snip>

Representatives of the American Civil Liberties Union and NARAL-Pro-Choice Oregon joined in testifying against the bill.

"This legislation penalizes organizations like Planned Parenthood, while masking an anti-choice agenda as the promotion of adoption," Roche said.

1. I suspect it may invoke a lot of 'road rage'--

21. I agree. I've seen other anti-abortion stickers on cars for years.
They always make me sick.

However, yesterday I placed SEVEN blue edged stickers OVER the yellow ribbons people have on their cars saying "SUPPORT OUR TROOPS".

My stickers say, "BRING THEM HOME IN ONE PEACE."

23. I think it would more likely
invoke road rage if someone had a "Right to Choose" plate. The anti-choicers are definitely more violent... hippocrits (sp?) that they are. My daughter drove through Idaho recently in a small car with a peace sticker on her bumper and she was pretty unnerved what with all the big SUV's and supersized pickup trucks tailgating her. She wasn't sure if it was coincidence or was invoked by her peace sticker but its a little stressful just the same.

2. I don't understand these plates.
The anti-abortion crowd is always behind them, so why do they say "choose" life? They don't support a woman's right to choose what is best for her. Choosing life is only supported under the pro-choice position. If they want a plate representing their position, "FORCE LIFE" would be more accurate.

9. Excellent point. Good call.
It's important to examine the confused, often contradictory and misogynist rhetoric they use. What also irritates me is how clever they think they are in "arguing" positions with this language, and that just because they "win" their argument (from their perspective) with that language, their "points" make sense in reality or are valid ideas they should get to force everyone to adhere to.

3. I think the next sign I take to an anti-war protest...
...should say, "Choose Life!"

Of course, if a lot of people started doing that, they'd stop issuing license plates with that slogan.

10. NICE.
I always told people thinking of voting for Bush because he was "pro-life" to see F 9/11 and then see if they could believe afterward that he shared their values about life. I was hoping they'd get, after seeing the dead infant killed by American "precision" bombing being tossed onto a heap of other bodies in the back of an old pick-up truck in Iraq that the president was not, in fact, pro-life. I would tell them, "Please consider seeing that film. I have and I can tell you that he doesn't care about the 'babies' lives--or your life, or mine."

Okay, I don't even feel like giving them anymore letters of the alphabet but my final thought is: not with this governor. He's going to tell you to fuck off, and then he'll laugh at Republicans.

5. It's their point of view.
It's their right to express it.

I don't think it's their right to force their view on the rest of us.

But, they have the right to their opinion. Even if 80-90% of them are hypocrites.

15. As long as the state is willing to equallyt support alternative views
like CHOOSE CHOICE on my license plate.

Otherwise it's simply more state supported propaganda and really not about free speech at all.

14. One of the first things JEB Bush did when he became Gov.
of Florida was approve the Choose Life plates. I couldn't believe it. I wrote letters to the editor, I made phone calls, wrote all my legislators in opposition to this state sponsored anti abortion message. In the end, the courts up held it.

13. We Have "RESPECT LIFE" Plates Here in Colorado
And more often than not, a car or SUV with those plates on it will cut you off. One almost ran me over one night as I was walking in to the 7-11 to pay for my gas. When it pulled in to a parking space, I walked over and said to teh driver "I guess you don't respect life once it's out of the womb, do you?"

They got back in the car and drove away.....

19. Good response and I hate the simplistic jingle "chose life"
That was a good response, glad you didn't get hurt.

I hate "chose life" to mean against having abortions safe and legal. Just because I think abortions should be safe and legal doesn't mean I chose death. If I did, I'd be dead, eh? I like the idea of using "chose life" as an anti-war slogan and will start doing this. Part of the problem is that people like to siimplify so they don't have to think. Simple repetitive things play into our reptilian brain associated with patterns, smells and emotions. Intellectualizing helps get past this, but this is why advertising works, why jingles work, etc. I want to tell them it just isn't that easy, chose life or don't chose life.

Respect All Life.

Then you should show little Iraqi children and deer and all sorts of things on it...but I'm guessing that isn't what they are really all about.

25. What is life, without choice? Life IS choice.
A life not worth living.

Prolife translates to- repression.

Republicans- the party of repression.

If we all agree to live life for the unborn, then we had better all get this planet ready for the generations to come. No more hot showers. No more driving. No more travelling. No more high tech. No more babies.

Life IS choice.

Stop playing God.

I could go on ad infinitem. But I have blueberries to plant.
And away we go!

26. Good God
It's bad enough every time I see one of those "one man one woman
vote yes of 36" bumper stickers...

I immediately think "red neck racist jerk" and am fairly distracted
from the task at hand...driving.

This one should really do it
and if they get this crap passed...

then I want a license plate that says, "Religious Right, the American
Taliban" or something just as outrageous.

Of course I''m sure their nonprofit funding would never be for
birth control or realistic and truthful sex education now would it?

Due to the incredible Oregon desire to tailgate constantly, thus
causing head-ons and fatal accidents as a local pastime on highway 101...
this can only add to that activity as well.

27. Take it from them!
"Choose life" is an excellant slogan for any human to repeat. So are "family values" and "christian values". Those last two have been co-opted for so long it isn't silly.

When I bought my current used car it had a metal jesus fish and a bumper sticker that said, "Jesus, don't leave earth without him." I'm not religous so I thought I'd take them off. A religous friend advised me to leave them on. I thought about that suggestion and decided I would...and that I would find a appropriate bumper sticker to go with them.

I found "Torture is not a family value" so I put that on. It gets looks.

The New Testament quotes Jesus as pro-peace. The New Testament is also9 a history the failure of his followers to get his simple message. Weird.

I really don't care what they put on their cars. At the very least it makes them easy to identify.

Of course, I'm real sure they'll come out with one that says "Pro-choice!" :eyes:
