Tehran - An Iranian convicted of blackmailing his gay partners with videotapes of their sex acts has been hanged, reports said on Saturday.

But Iran's Islamic regime also imposes the death penalty for consensual "sodomy" where the offence is repeated and the convict is an adult of "sound mind".

So far this year, Iran has executed at least 15 people, according to a tally based on witness and press reports.

In 2004 at least 159 people were executed in the Islamic republic - the highest rate in the world after China - according to human rights watchdog Amnesty International.

As well as repeat sodomy and rape, murder, armed robbery, apostasy and serious drug trafficking are all punishable by death in Iran, which enforces a strict form of Islamic law.

U.S. to sell “bunker buster” bombs to Israel

The United States is considering selling 100 GBU-28 guided “bunker buster” bombs to Israel, raising concerns about a unilateral Israeli attack against Iran.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), which oversees military aid to foreign states, notified the Congress of the proposed $30 million deal.

Once notified, Congress has 30 days to refuse proposed foreign military sales but rarely does so.

US sells Israel 500 'bunker-busters'

Iran says Israel would 'pay a price' for pre-emptive strike against its nuclear facilities.

The announcement this week by Israel that it would buy 500 "bunker-buster" bombs from the United States concentrated the world's attention on the escalating crisis over Iran's clerical-ruled republic's alleged development of nuclear weapons, reports the International Herald Tribune.

The 2,000 pound bombs, capable of penetrating concrete fortifications 6 feet thick, are part of one of the largest weapons deals between Israel and the US in years. The bombs include airborne versions, guidance units, training bombs and detonators. They are guided by an existing Israeli satellite used by the military.

In addition to the 500 one-ton bunker-busters, the purchase includes 2,500 other one-ton bombs, 1,000 half-ton bombs and 500 quarter-ton bombs. Funding will come from US military aid to Israel.

The timing of the sale couldn't be more pointed.

Both the US and Israel have strongly objected to Iran's nuclear enrichment program, claiming it is a thinly veiled ploy to develop a nuclear strike capability, and not the energy project Iran says it is.

...accoding to Amnesty International, which monitors these things closely, Iran was second only to China in the number of excecutions in 2004.

That's not to excuse the Saudi's blood thirstyness, they just have a smaller population to work with.

a chance for many, many appeals before being killed. And certainly no one in this country has been put to death for homosexuality or even extortion (as in this case). Sorry but your comparison just doesn't equate for me.

10. Iran is a sovereign nation - There are a few executions in the US too

I think we are too bogged down in the current colonial quagmire to think about spreading freedom to Iran. We can't afford to invade many more countries, even if they do have oil. But hey, who knows? We're not past the first half of the second term.
