Minutemen wrap border stakeout
NACO, Arizona (AP) -- Volunteers recruited over the Internet to monitor illegal immigrant activity along a stretch of Arizona's border ended their monthlong campaign this weekend as they began -- peering through binoculars along a dusty border road.

Members of the Minuteman Project hailed the program as a success, and organizers said they plan to expand the mission to the other states bordering Mexico, and parts of the Canadian border.

"This could not have been done without all of you. You did this together -- you the people," co-organizer Chris Simcox told some 150 Minutemen and supporters gathered Saturday outside a church at Palominas.

Organizers said nearly 900 volunteers -- some of them armed -- had spent at least one eight-hour shift in the field through Friday, working mostly stationary patrols along a 23-mile stretch of border in Cochise County. The final eight-hour shift was scheduled to end at 6 a.m. Sunday.

Organizers said volunteers' calls to the Border Patrol resulted in the arrests of 335 illegal immigrants. Project organizers had ordered volunteers not to detain any illegal border crossers they encountered, and no major incidents were reported.

1. When the 2nd great dust-bowl starts in a few months
I wonder is the Canadians and Mexicans will remember this boorish behavior as Americans try to cross the border.

10. Have you ever travelled in Mexico?
Just wondering if you really know how foreign visitors are treated there by the Mexican government.

17. Given what happened the last time Mexico opened her arms up to the U.S....
I'm not surprised Mexico is wary.

My family lives in Texas and Mexico, and the Mexican government is far far more kind than the US government.

Edited on Sun May-01-05 12:24 AM by seriousstan
But that was all. Was there any news about a rogue Minuteman gunning down an illegal alien?

7. No incident except the one you mentioned
and the college kid involved in that event (having an illegal immigrant hold up a t-shirt after he was given food and water) was thrown out of the organization. It went pretty well, despite of the outraged cries from many here who thought the Minutemen would cause a war between Mexico and the United States, slaughter illegals by the truckload, etc. Of course you will now not be able to find anyone here who claims they predicted such things - but they did.

You've got a job to do. Oh, what's that, your tired and want to go home. You realize that bubba idea is really dumb and someone forgot the crackers and you've got to pee and take a shower. 9. Actually, they are planning to expand to other sections of the border,
including part of the northern border. The also plan to target businesses that hire illegal immigrants. I think this is far from over.

15. I dunno. They went and did precisely what they said they intended to
do. That's not a bad thing. It allows us to extrapolate, with some uncertainty, to be sure, that their goals are also likely as stated.

They didn't do the positive or neutral things that others said they must have intended to do, but which they never said they intended. That's an irrelevant thing. Not achieving goals that strangers arrogantly ascribe to you isn't something to be concerned about.

They didn't do all the evil and racist things that others assumed that people different from themselves obviously must be intent on doing. That's a very good thing. If only because it just might help correct rather obscurantist thinking and judgmentalism.

That it didn't fit in the latter's narrow worldview is simply a thing. Neither good, nor bad, and such a mismatch between reality and expectations probably frequently happens to the latter folk. How the latter interact with the new information, whether they bring their worldview in line with observation or not, now *that* could be a good or bad thing.

20. The Point
"Organizers said volunteers' calls to the Border Patrol resulted in the arrests of 335 illegal immigrants."

It also focused national attention on the problem of illegal immigrants walking across the border and encouraged private citizens to contribute in a constructive fashion to solving national problems.

This sounds like one of those activities someone does just to pad their resume.

<sarcasm> Way to show some sacrifice, guys. A few days on the border and you're out! </sarcasm>

19. Thing I've noticed about right-wingers
This whole thing about citizens on border keeping the brown man out, is music to their ears. Especially the volunteer part. They would love for everyone to go down and patrol for free.

Funny thing is, they are not volunteering their time. Go figure. Kind of "I'm right behind you--way behind you" mentality.
