Three out of four Iraqis say Islam should be source of law
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20050506/wl_mideast_afp/iraqpollpoliticsreligion_050506150015

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Three out of four Iraqis believe Islam should be the main or only source of law and legislation in their country, according to a poll of 2,700 Iraqis.

While just over 74 percent thought Islam should be the sole or main source of legislation, just 2 percent said religion should play no role in law-making, a poll showed Friday.

The findings come as parliament prepares to draft a new constitution, which will notably focus on the role of Islam, Iraq's official religion, in society.

The poll was based on some 2,705 interviews conducted from April 11 to April 20 by an Iraqi firm employed by the conservative US International Republican Institute.

2. This could be good
If they establish law based on religion, we could send all the Xtian fanatics over there to see how it would really be to live under a
theocracy.

Reality might change some minds.

4. Islamic culture has little regard for national boundaries and laws
and truly believes in a worldwide "nation of Islam". Whether the "International Republican Institute" likes it or not, it's always been that way, and it will always be that way.

11. Well, shouldn't be too much of a stone's throw from the Fundamentalist,
Dominionist view of how the US should be (is destined to be) an Imperial, Christian power nation.

How fitting. Both fascists, both jihadists, both NUTS. And here we sit in the middle.

Oi vey.

At the dedication of the Ten Commandments monument, Justice Roy Moore said, “The institutions of our society are founded on the belief that there is an authority higher than the authority of the State; that there is a moral law which the State is powerless to alter; that the individual possesses rights, conferred by the Creator which government must respect.” Justice Moore believes that our laws and liberties come from the God of the Bible, and the Ten Commandments monument is nothing more than an acknowledgement of our historical heritage, and the theological reality of God’s sovereignty.

7. In case anyone is tempted to laugh up his or her sleeve
I don't doubt that a substantial segment of U.S. society would respond that Christianity (as defined by the individual respondent) should similarly be the basis for our laws. Judge Moore is a nut, but he's got lots and lots of supporters.

6. So...
The only non-physical things differentiating them from some Americans are the religion and the percentage.

9. Iraq's official religion
I thought we wrote their constitution for them. Are we writing constitutions that have "official religions"? I would also vbenture a guess that a similar poll in America would have similar results..at least reported that way on MSM.

10. I don't find this difficult to believe.
A problem may arise (as it is now arising here in the U.S. despite our long history of Separation of Church and State) if fundamentalism gains a foothold in their politics.

I don't believe the majority of Iraqi people wish to live in an Islamic Theocratic State any more than we Americans wish to live in a Christian Theocratic State.

13. Not to worry. The Great White Father in Washington promises to
convert his heathen brown-skinned children on the Iraqi Rez to "christianity" after he has finished bombing them into submission.

Great White Father Bush will send his ignorant brown children away to the Mission Schools run by vicious psychopathic fundamentalist republican pedophiles, and eventually this will make the heathen Iraqi children see the error of their ways.

Everybody sing, hallelujah.

18. Don't laugh: All the missionaries are waiting to go when it's safe.
No lie. They're ready and organized, and have all the papers and bibles ready. It's too funny. But while the Iraqi's might be ready to die for their god, I doubt seriously if many of us would.

17. Iraq was founded on Islamic principles.
The same way that the U.S. was founded on Christianity. Or so say religious extremists in both countries. I suppose Iraq will outlaw the teaching of evolution too. They have some catching up to do.

19. Even If BushCo Wins, They Lose
Even if Buckaroo Bush's Duck Soup Posse accomplishes its stated goal of creating a democratic Iraq, the US is still going to come out the loser, and this poll helps show it. I think that a lot of those reps are interested in forming a nation-state to their own design, not something designed by and foisted on them by PNAC and Gee Dubya Bush administration interests. Should they gain a country with at least a measure of order and stability they are not only going to be considerably less than grateful for the shape of Buckaroo Bush's intervention in their country, but they're going to be downright hostile.

And this hostility, unlike that of the Saddam Hussein era, is likely to be heartfelt at the mass level, not just by the elite at the top.
