U.S. Troops Battle Insurgents in Iraq
By THOMAS WAGNER, Associated Press Writer

U.S. forces backed by helicopter gunships and warplanes swept through a large area of western Iraq near the Syrian border for a third day Tuesday, raiding desert outposts and safe houses belonging to insurgents, the U.S. military said.

A fourth U.S. Marine died Monday, but it was not immediately clear if that happened during the offensive, the military said.

A Los Angeles Times reporter embedded with the offensive said 20 U.S. troops also were wounded, but the U.S. military could not immediately confirm that.

On Tuesday, fighting was reported in Obeidi, 185 miles west of Baghdad, and the two nearby towns of Rommana and Karabilah, an Associated Press reporter in the region said. He said large numbers of Qaim residents were fleeing the area.

4. Mr embedded Los Angeles Times reporter could be in trouble ...
Edited on Tue May-10-05 05:01 AM by hadrons
for reporting the truth ... 20 U.S. troops wounded, yikes!!! And most dimwitted Americans think of being wounded like a John Wayne movie wounded and not what it really is

Another article stated that the resistence fighters are now aiming for the ankles and other parts of the body not covered with armor ... and the resistence fighters wants wounded troopers almost more than killed ones because ones killed are put in a 'transfer tube' and forgotten, but wounded soldiers tied up other soldiers and eat up resources caring for them (although Dumbya would have no problem throwing them into the street)

6. That strategy used to be standard practice.
Modern medicine and body armor WAS putting that strategy out of business but, even Iraqis will learn how to fight smarter if you engage them long enough. The US has. So now they're learning.

5. Well it has to go on as there has to be a win
The GOP is going to have to claim a win. Face it how can they say we are the "Greatest army' in the world if 10,000 men with small arms can keep us in our place. OK so it may be 20,000 or 30,000. The longer it goes on the bigger the group gets. I am not sure that is because it really get bigger or because it pays to say that. Some days it gets smaller and those days they say we are winning. Most of the trouble for the USA I think that this is a third rate country and we can not win. I guess it does seem odd that we could have such a hand in taking down Hitler but could not win in Iraq or Vietnam.I think it is our mis-reading history on the WW2 stuff. The USA did not win it but we as a group did. This war also looks like a lot is done for Political reasons so I am willing to bet we will find the war room is run by about 3 men looking at voting polls.

7. More than 70 displaced families, who took refuge in - (truth emerges)
Edited on Tue May-10-05 08:55 AM by dArKeR
More than 70 displaced families, who took refuge in the former president Saddam Hussein's army military compound, refused an offer of money from the US army in exchange for leaving. Thousands of Iraqis, who were evicted from their homes by post-war rent hikes, live among of the ruins of devastated military compounds across the war-torn capital.

The Chicago Tribune said some of the US forces were north of the Euphrates River, but most were stuck south of the waterway as engineers tried to build a pontoon bridge there Sunday.
